Life & Work with Nicole Krecicki and Nicole Wiegand

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Krecicki and Nicole Wiegand. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The South Street Art Mart is an artist-run retail shop located in the heart of Philly’s South Street shopping district. With DIY roots and punk sensibility, the Art Mart is home to over 180 Philly-area artists and makers (and some from around the country, but still totally indie!). All products available in store and online are created by independent artists; handpicked by shop co-owners and curators @NightOwlDesigns (Nicole Wiegand) & @TapedOffTV (Nicole Krecicki).

Opened in Nov 2018 with the support of the South Street Headhouse District, the Art Mart was only meant to be a holiday pop-up shop. Thanks to the overwhelming support, love and encouragement the community has shown our shop and our artists, we have been able to stick around much longer than anticipated. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While running a small indie business will always be a challenge in this era of big box stores and amazon retailing, being a fledgling shop during a global pandemic presented its own set of obstacles that no one could have prepared us for.

South Street Art Mart is first and foremost an indie/artist space. We house over 180 artists with work ranging from stickers, paintings, t-shirts, housewares, etc. We are proud to showcase products from people who may not be able to find space in a traditional gallery setting and have been very fortunate to find a community who has responded so positively to us doing things our way.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Pivoting is crucial to survive in this ever-changing time. When we first went into lockdown, we didn’t have an online shop. It was one of those things that was always on the to-do list but always ended up getting pushed to the bottom. When we had to close our storefront (with no way of knowing for how long), it was time to change that. We began building our online shop piece by piece- product by product. Now we have a fully functional online store that allows us to ship any item worldwide.

Pricing:

  • We try to keep items priced accessibly, with the average price range being $2-25 (some pieces higher, but that’s the general).
