Life & Work with Stacy Heitman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Heitman.

Hi Stacy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from the Aveda Institute of Minnesota, I headed to Los Angeles for the Glitz and Glamour of the city. I started my advanced training at Planet Salon in Beverly Hills where I went through an extensive amount of training. For the last 7 years, I have worked at Sally Hershberger Los Angeles. I’ve had experiences there that I would never have imagined. Working with some of the biggest celebrities in the industry and building a full clientele has definitely been a one-of-a-kind experience. The pandemic really changed my outlook on Los Angeles and I always wanted to live somewhere that had a better balance of city life and nature, so I seized the opportunity and made the move to Denver!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like any hairstylists, I’ve had plenty of ups and downs. I was fortunate enough to establish myself in Los Angeles which is something I’m very proud of.

Deciding to move to Denver presented a whole new level of challenges. Building a brand-new clientele in a brand-new city is hard and it takes time. Luckily, I have a very supportive husband and really good friends to help cheer me on.

Looking for the right salon in Denver was a bit of an obstacle as well. In this city, most hairstylists cut and color. I’m a color specialist and only color hair. I wasn’t sure how salons would feel about that and I wasn’t sure what part of the city I wanted to work in. I started following Isla Salon on Instagram when Danielle Gordon was just building the new salon out. When it was almost done, I took a tour of it and I just knew it was the perfect fit for me. Danielle was happy to have a color specialist join her team.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hair color specialist from Los Angeles with a lot of patience for in-depth consultations and helping my clients achieve their hair goals. I’ve worked with some of the biggest celebrities out there. My client list includes Robin Wright, Gwen Stefani, Ciara, Courtney Love, Paula Patton, Gina Rodriguez, Ariana Grande, Ambyr Childers, Adrien Brody, and Dylan Penn to name a few.

Moving to Denver has been exactly what I needed. I’ve been able to slow things down and really work on my creative side. I found that I have made instant connections with my clientele here and they have had a real appreciation for my expertise in color.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I was able to assist someone who had a great passion for color. He was a really great mentor. I have worked with my assistant for the last four years and have tried really hard to be a great mentor to her. When you assist someone, you really do learn a lot and learn what kind of hair colorist you want to be.

You can also find a lot of inspiration on social media. I follow a few people whose work I really love. I haven’t had a lot of time to take classes these past few years but now that I’m in a new city and have a little more free time, it’s something I’m looking forward to. I always try to work around other hard-working artists and people who are always motivated in learning more.
