Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Pawlikiewicz.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 29 years, I’ve taken up a lot of interests but just one passion: storytelling. Since childhood, I’ve lugged around my dad’s old Panasonic camcorder recruiting my friends and brothers to star in any homemade movie we could put together. Into high school, I upgraded to my first DSLR and began shooting headshots and senior portraits for friends and family. After attending the College of William & Mary, I used the camera as a tool to document my travels, such as biking solo across America, traveling to places as foreign to me as Ghana and Cambodia, and living in places as familiar as my mom’s childhood home in Medellin, Colombia.
After a brief stint in the corporate world, I decided to return to my passion for storytelling and decided to specialize in the outdoor industry. Professionally, I’ve shot for outdoor publications, such as Rock & Ice and Gym Climber Magazines, and for several outdoor brands, such as Adidas Terrex, Rumpl, Lems, and Feral Mountain Co. In 2018, I founded On The Go Media and continue to work as a freelance videographer and photographer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting to where I am today has been a long and arduous road, with its fair share of challenges. Working in an oversaturated industry where cameras are only getting cheaper and more accessible, a keen eye and strong network becomes even more important. At first, this work for me seemed to only be a hobby and I needed to constantly supplement it with other work in order to stay afloat. I’m committed to a simple, minimalist lifestyle which means I don’t need much to survive and that’s allowed me to take on bigger creative risks in my work and remain flexible. That approach was critical for me to make any strides in my creative career and continues to be the case to this day.
Please tell us about On The Go Media – what should we know?
On The Go Media specializes in documenting authentic stories and experiences in some of the harshest environments in the world. My work has brought me bikepacking through the Peruvian Andes solo, climbing up hundreds of vertical walls for the perfect shot, and up some of the tallest mountains in North America. My job is part documentarian and part athlete, in order to get in position for a shot I myself have needed to be a competent climber/cyclist/traveler all before even pulling out a camera. I’m most proud of my work in climbing magazines, most recently my story published earlier this month on the Ice Climbing World Cup Finals which took place on February 2019 in Denver, CO. What sets us apart from the pack is the extent to which I’m willing to work for the perfect shot. It’s not rare that I’ll pull many all-nighters to finish an edit for a client or have an alpine start of 3 am in order to summit with a group of athletes at sunrise. Documentary work is all about timing, and being at the right place at the right time, so it’s not rare for us in this line of work to be both patient and ruthless in our vision.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination. Failure is inevitable when you’re chasing something that seems impossible to ever reach. The key is simply to never stop trying. I still fear failure, as I’m sure everyone does, but the difference between how I’m living now vs. how I used to live is that I don’t let that fear hold me back. It’s worse to stay complacent, to never realize your full potential than to try and fail forward. Eventually, with enough hard work and determination, you will reach your goals.
