Meet Adrienne Johnson-Conway of Deiter’s Chocolates in Southeast Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Johnson-Conway.

Adrienne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mom bought chocolates from this shop when I was an infant. Years later, I spent 15 years creating and learning from the same chocolatier who created them. When the opportunity came to have my own shop, in this very space, I took it, with the help of my partners. This shop holds many memories for me, and it is fun to honor a bit of that while making it my own. I really thrive on the challenge of creating new flavor combinations that our customers will find unique and delicious.

The original shop, which stood in this same spot for decades, was named Dietrich’s Chocolates. When the previous owner retired, we chose to rename the shop Deiter’s Chocolates…my partners have four generations of men named Dietrich in their own family, including their son, and Deiter is a family nickname. And so the shop was named Deiter’s Chocolates.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My passion is creating; I love creating new varieties of truffles, and the freedom to experiment as a chocolatier. Once I became an owner, there was suddenly a lot more to do to manage the business – things that don’t always feel so creative! But with the help of my partners, we’ve got all bases covered – from creativity to marketing and merchandising, to managing finances. So together, we make a great team.

Please tell us about Deiter’s Chocolates.
We work out of the original kitchen right inside the shop, which we fondly describe as “love-worn.” We specialize in handcrafting our own truffles and caramel nut turtles, along with clusters, barks, and a selection of our signature chocolate bars. There’s really something for everyone in our shop, and our staff is happy to take the time to give customers many options and suggestions.

We’re proud of the fact that though the original business changed hands, we have a large base of loyal customers who truly appreciate that I learned from the previous owner, and have continued many of the traditions he started so many years ago. And now it’s fun that I can add some flair here and there with more eclectic creations, which has drawn a lot of new customers. We regularly receive comments about our friendly customer service. We’re a small team and everyone really does enjoy their job, and it shows.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had known how fun and challenging running a business would be, I would have opened one sooner.
