Today we’d like to introduce you to Allana Scourfield-Thomas. She and her team share her story with us below.
Allana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got to where you are today.
My journey started a long time ago. For as long as I could remember, I dreamed of being a teacher, working with children and inspiring others in dance!
Awesome, and so how did all of this get started?
Allana’s Academy of Dance opened its doors in January of 2009. In only its first year – AAD was voted BEST dance studio in Colorado on The Denver Channels A*List! What an accomplishment – as this was our inaugural year and we were against 60 other fabulous local studios! The studio has gone on to with the A*List in 2010, 2013, 2014 & 2018! Miss Allana has studied Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Lyrical for over 30 years. It all started when her mother ran an in-home daycare center – Along with her formal studio training, Allana taught the before and after school children dances in her very own basement! After Allana’s mother decided to not continue her before and after school program, parents starting calling Allana asking her to continue teaching their children! She told her parents – “mum and dad, I’m going to open a dance studio in the basement” – of course, her parents shrugged it off, but before they knew it, she had 40 dancers at the young age of 16 years old.
She has choreographed numerous pieces for show, competition (Rainbow, Tribute, Kids Artistic Review, LA Dance Force, etc.) (placing top 1st), political campaign events, community events, dance teams and more! Allana has coached runway modeling for competition, with one former dancer winning the Colorado Missy Miss competition in both dance and runway. She has also choreographed the talent pieces for 2010 Miss Colorado and Miss Outstanding Teen Colorado contestants and for the former 2011 Miss Colorado USA, Blair Griffith! Allana was a dance major at the University of Northern Colorado and ran the dance department of gymnastics school, Theo’s Gymnastics in Greeley, CO at the age of 19.
Allana’s Academy of Dance has now grown to a well known and established “Home away from home” environment for dancers ages 2 to adult and has opened their doors to both dancers that want to compete or dance professionally or simply dance for fun!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a dance studio definitely has its challenges. I remember other studio owners telling me – “Oh owning a dance studio is a whole different ballgame. There are so many learning curves. It’s extremely hard and easy to lose your passion in dance because of the daunting hours it takes to keep the business running.” I remember thinking to myself – well that’s them… not me – but I very quickly learned that they were right. It is extremely challenging running a business like a dance studio and is certainly not for the thin-skinned… but despite its challenges, I get to wake up everyday and say – “Wow… I’m literally doing what I love and spreading my passion for dance to so many young people in the world.” The impact that a simple dance teacher can have on a child is a huge one. I strive to always give my all every day that I step foot into my studio’s doors and the payback that I get from it makes all of the sweat and tears so worth it. I know that I am leading by example and try to be the best positive role model I can be to these kids. They are in a sense, my children. I love them and love what I do so much.
Allana’s Academy of Dance – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our mission statement is At AAD we strive to preserve the art of Dance by instilling that passion in a fun and nurturing family environment. We are coming up on our ten year anniversary and are so proud of how we have grown and impacted the lives of others throughout the years! We offer classes for ages 2 to adult in the forms of Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, Breaking, Lyrical, Contemporary, Modern, Acro/Tumbling, Pointe, Leaps/Turns, Tone/Flexibility and Combo classes. I think what sets us apart from others is the fact that we have a wonderful family dynamic in the studio. The relationships between the parents and dancers is truly amazing. Everyone lifts each other up supports one another. We have the nickname of being the “Nicest Kids in Town Studio” and it really does shine through and is exciting to witness. Along with being the top-rated dance studio on the Denver AList – we also offer an amazing opportunity for our dancers that want to take their training to the next level. AAD is the only studio that offers a Hip Hop Crew opportunity for all of our enrolled dancers. Hip Hop Crew meets every Sunday from noon-3:00 and is further dance training that we offer for FREE to our enrolled dancers. Our Hip Hop crew also gets the opportunity to perform in local events throughout the community!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would have to say the proudest moment in my career so far is simply to see how these kids are not only growing to be wonderful dancers – but more importantly growing to be wonderful HUMANS. It’s not all about the awards you receive, or how high you can kick your leg, or how many turns you can do… it’s about growing as a person, having empathy, caring for others and being proud of who you are – where you are.
