Meet Allison Reitz of Good Elephant in RiNo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Reitz.

Allison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I returned from my yoga teacher training in India and started teaching at a local studio, I realized two things: First, I would never be able to make living teaching at the studio, as I was being paid $25/class. Second, I began to realize how many people were genuinely interested in trying yoga for many reasons but were too intimidated to venture into a yoga studio or didn’t have the budget for a membership.

So, I started an online community calendar of free and donation-based classes, and I soon found that the classes I was offered through this service were trendy. I wanted to inspire other teachers to create these more inclusive and affordable community environments, so I invited local spaces and teachers to get involved.

I envision a world where people are empowered to take responsibility for their own health and happiness – not looking to outward advice or medicine, but to their own all-knowing heart. In my experience, we are the only ones who have the power to cure ourselves.

Each time I teach, my wonderful students remind me why I created Good Elephant’s community platform: Dane, who works at Office Depot and printed my first fliers, and told me later that he would have never ventured into a yoga studio; and Patti, who is elderly, thin, and suffers from a serious illness – she can’t afford to pay for yoga, but comes to our pay-what-you-can Sunday morning class and shows her appreciation with a genuine thank-you and hug after class. It’s amazing to think that it’s possible for this feeling of community to grow beyond myself – each of our amazing teachers is making a powerful impact on every student’s life!

I started Good Elephant because I wanted to share my passion for yoga. Still, our community-powered platform can be used to bring people together for any class or event, from art classes and run clubs to community dinners and even volunteer groups.

After launching on Monday, Good Elephant’s new platform for online classes has gotten such a great response from our global community! And although it’s an extraordinary time, we’re hoping our services can help offer a chance for local spaces and teachers to seize this opportunity to emerge even stronger by reaching a new audience and continuing valuable connections with existing community members. We’ve also been delighted to discover that our live, engaging style of online community content stands out in the sea of pre-recorded options on the internet.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our biggest struggle has been keeping up with the demand from our teachers for local spaces. You might think we would have trouble during the COVID 19 situation, with yoga studios closing all around us, but we were able to think fast and pivot quickly. Our new platform for teachers to offer online classes through our app has allowed us to increase our growth tremendously just this week!

Please tell us about your business.
We’re a grassroots, community-powered startup that connects teachers and leaders with our growing global community. To support out-of-work teachers, leaders, and artists during the current crisis, we’ve set our platform up to make it easy for anyone to jump into sharing classes, events, and workshops online through our app, including signups, waivers, payment processing, automatic confirmation emails, direct payouts, real-time technical support, etc. Our Leader Members have the option to offer online content for free or on a pay-what-you-can basis.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As the world returns to normal, we’ll keep our online classes running while re-incorporating our original model, connecting our wonderful leader members with local spaces to offer inclusive and affordable classes in communities across America. We’re currently in the process of raising our seed round of funding, which will allow us to build the software and marketing structure that will enable us to scale quickly. I’ve always known that Good Elephant will be everywhere, helping the people of the world discover and do what wakes them up. It’s just a matter of time.
