Meet Allison Yacht of BraveHoods in Longmont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Yacht.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allison. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
BraveHoods was founded in 2013 in response to my daughter’s cancer experience. She is doing well now, but when she was five, she fought cancer for a year. It was a tough year, but the hardest part was her baldness. She was an active, outgoing kid and I watched her self-consciousness chip away at her self-confidence. There was so much I couldn’t do to help her, this seemed like something I could figure out. We tried everything to make her comfortable and finally found a lightweight hooded t-shirt is what made the difference.

With her hoodie, she could control who saw her head and who didn’t. This was a game-changer for her. After her year of treatment and year of recovery, we founded BraveHoods to give back to our amazing community. BraveHoods is a one-for-one non-profit organization. We sell our cool, inspiring shirts and for each one sold, one is donated. We have gifted almost 7,000 BraveHoods to kids all over the country. We also give to siblings because we know they can get lost in the shuffle sometimes. Additionally, there is nothing better than feeling like a team and wearing similar shirts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the seven years, we have been doing this, there have definitely been some challenges. Our first challenge was finding the shirts. At the time, there was only one wholesaler that made the kids’ shirts we are looking for. And, only recently have we found women’s shirts that we really love. We have also had to adjust our message several times. Pediatric cancer is a bummer topic, but the community is so very hopeful. We want to share that hope with those fighting cancer, another disease, or just a nice pick-me-up.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with BraveHoods – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in two main things. First and foremost, we want to gift hope and comfort to families battling cancer. Cancer stinks and we know a shirt doesn’t cure anything, but a simple hoodie can make a difference to someone who needs it. We receive beautiful notes from parents telling us what a difference this made in their child’s experience.

Additionally, on the other side of the coin, we want to sell our shirts to people who understand our mission. Our shirts have cool, inspirational designs and messages, so they work for anyone. Our BraveHoods make an especially good gift for those recently diagnosed with cancer. We have light and heavy hoodies, we carry soft t-shirts and even a hoodie bathrobe! We also have some pretty cool mugs and tote bags that help to inspire strength. We carry sizes from 6 months to adult XXXL.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We have big plans for our future. To help spread our mission, we look forward to working with more retail stores to carry our products. We are planning our first big fundraising event for the fall. We are looking for a few amazing corporate partners.

Pricing:

  • Our shirts retail between $30-$60.
  • Our mugs are awesome and cost between $10-$12.
