Meet Amanda Allen of Birch Salon in SODO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Allen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was first bit by the hair bug working as a receptionist at a salon, Just In Style, in Highschool. After getting my degree in SOCY and working as a Social Worker for a year in Austin, TX, I decided to go to the Aveda Institute Denver.

I began working for a local Aveda Salon, where I spent the first 7.5 years of my career. This is what shaped me into the stylist I am today. I wanted to begin my own brand behind the chair, so Birch was born in 2015.

Birch began as a solo concept at Salons by JC. I was so excited to grow and really honed my skills by taking classes and trying new products and colors. I became an educator for Hot Heads extensions and also started specializing in creative color. After working on building Birch for three years, I found the perfect location and was ready to grow.

We are now a boutique style salon in the heart of the SODO neighborhood of Denver. As a solo artist, I had the honor of participating in events such as Denver Fashion Week and Historias. Now it is amazing to be able to participate in in these events with my amazing salon team. We also host many talents stylists to continue our education as a salon. I have also had the honor of being nominated for the South West Hair Styling Awards for Hair Colorist of the year for 2019.

I am so excited to see what the future holds for our amazing team.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is always a struggle to not compare yourself to others, especially in this industry. Sometimes, you see people who may be doing more than you or seem to be on a level you would like to be on. But it is important to stay in your lane and enjoy the ride.

Birch Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in:
• Extensions (I am an educator for Hot Heads)
• Blonding
• Balayage
• Vivid color and color correction (I am a member of the unicorn tribe)

We pride ourselves on using all Kevin Murphy color and products. Our products are all Peta approved and all of the packagings are made from ocean waste plastic. The color is 100% ammonia free.

We also keep up with photo shoots and shows to keep ourselves inspired by our craft.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as living a life love and being comfortable. Being surrounded by people I love. And making other people feel good about themselves. As a business, being a place in the community that people are excited about and feel like they are a part of.
