Meet Amy R. Klin of The Lice Cure in North East Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy R. Klin.

Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2016, after moving into our new home with our two daughters, two and three years old, our three year old began itching her head, and I mean really itching her head. Given that she has eczema and was not attending daycare or preschool, we chalked it up to her eczema, not head lice. After a few days, I trusted my gut as a mom and begin inspecting her head.

Never having had head lice as a kid and no experience whatsoever, like so many others, I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, so I called a friend for advice. Minutes after talking with my friend, I discovered a louse walking through my daughter’s hair! I screamed, called my husband at work, “I knew it,” I told him! My husband downplayed the whole situation, stating that it wasn’t a big deal and treating with common OTC treatment would be just fine. After bagging EVERYTHING in our home for a month and treating our daughter with common OTC treatments, we discovered that this was an uphill battle and we were getting nowhere. The pesticide based common OTC treatments would burn her scalp every time they were applied and we were still finding nits (eggs).

At our wits (nits) end and after a little research, I discovered that common OTC treatments have a low efficacy these days. There is a whole industry for head lice removal! I scheduled an appointment with a local lice removal company and was well informed that I wasn’t alone. There are so many other families that are spinning their wheels for weeks, months and sometimes years, treating themselves with OTC products. Shortly after our licemare experience, a good friend of mine called me looking for help and it felt so rewarding to help her and her family. The whole experience couldn’t have come at a better time. My daughters were getting ready to start preschool and I was at a crossroads of going back to work, but not quite sure how I wanted to spend my time away from my daughters. I wanted to spend my time doing something I was passionate about, which happens to be helping others and as a communication studies major, talking! I find it incredibly rewarding to educate others on such a taboo topic, and saving them time, money and their sanity!

Given the frustration that I had experienced, I became very passionate about helping others with their licemare experience. I began working for and training as a lice removal specialist with a global lice removal company. In 2017, I resigned and started my own mobile lice removal company, The Lice Cure. I am forever grateful to have the opportunity everyday to do what I love.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall I feel pretty fortunate, the first couple of years as a small business have gone well. The biggest challenge midway was staffing. I was a one-man show. Marketing, administrative tasks, educating others, treating families, etc… I hit the ground running but soon found that as business grew, I couldn’t do it all myself. It is a little tricky to find and hire others who want to work with and or around bugs. Also, the schedule is on-call, seven days a week, you never know when someone will detect head lice on themselves or on their children or family members and need our service. I needed to find someone who had freedom and flexibility. Thankfully after the first year of business, I officially hired my first employee, she is a real lifesaver!

Please tell us about The Lice Cure.
My company, The Lice Cure, is a one-stop shop for all things head lice. Prevention, Education, Professional Screenings, DIY Kits for families who have the time and knowledge to treat their family themselves, and Full-Service Treatment for families who would prefer we take care of it for them.

We are mobile head lice removal specialists, available seven days a week.

All of our products (preventative products and DIY Kits) are non-toxic, free of pesticides, completely family friendly.

We work with schools, PTA groups, summer camps, and salons to educate others regarding detection, prevention, and myths that still exist today.

Our full-service treatment has each individual with head lice treated and lice free in 1 hour, with non-toxic products, and arming them with the knowledge as to how to clean their home without doing more than necessary. As well as the knowledge and products for prevention going forward. Comforting families and letting them know that head lice is as common as ever and will not bring harm or disease, Head lice is a nuisance that is challenging and time-consuming for most families to be rid of. We are helping to save families time, money and their sanity.

Unlike other lice removal companies, we do not run Google ads, we rely on referrals from families we screen, treat or help with prevention. We put marketing dollars back into our community schools, as sponsorships, and auction baskets (The Lice Cure Preventative Pamper Basket for school Auctions worth $300+). We also help families who may need a little extra support for our services by offering pro-bono services for treatment and or donating The Lice Cure DIY Lice Removal Kits to schools/classrooms. Helping a family helps all of us; it truly takes a village!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Southern CA and on one beautiful Southern CA day as I was walking to school I noticed a huge sign taped up on a light pole that read, Happy 6th Birthday Amy! My dad had his friend who was an artist make this sign with a Care Bear scene, my favorite! Made me feel like the most special girl in the whole world! My oldest daughter and I now share the month of April for birthdays and I just love making her feel like the most special girl in the whole world!
