Hi Andy, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
I am Andy Bee, I own Andy Bee’s House of Beauty and The Bee Collection Luxury Streetwear. I am a professional hair and makeup artist and female Latina entrepreneur and mother located in Aurora, CO.
What are some newer projects you are working on?
I am always working on something new and fun, but I am currently in the process of creating a luxury streetwear brand called “ The Bee Collection “ Fashion has always been a huge part of my life, so I am very excited to drop the first pieces of my brand this Spring 2021. I have also been enjoying writing in my blog more consistently on my website, I’m definitely working on creating a fun and educational place online for people interested in beauty related topics.
How do you balance family and work life?
That’s a great question! Finding balance has always been tough for me, since I have always been very dedicated to my job, some people would have called me a workaholic in the past. I’ve learned that saying “no” to things that I didn’t want to do was the key to success for me. When I say no to working late or working on my days off, I’m saying yes to being with my family and being present with them when they need me. Motherhood is a full-time job and I refuse to miss out on watching my children grow just so I can work. I have my calendar with me all the time to organize every hair appointment and karate class, to make sure I am present for both when the time is needed. I have my “business woman” days and my “stay at home, mom” days. And by doing this I have found the balance in my family and work life.
We’d love if you could share some advice for newer stylists and entrepreneurs.
Absolutely! As a new entrepreneur and stylist, it’s easy to feel discouraged and scared trying new things and taking the jump to accomplishing your goals and dreams. My advice is to push through and stay strong, when you feel uncomfortable that’s when your growing! Constantly remind yourself of the long-term goal and surround yourself with positive people and things like a vision board to help you stay focused. Always try your best, because what’s the worst that can happen? You didn’t accomplish your goal? Then try again! Don’t let you stand in the way of yourself and never give up on your dreams no matter how crazy they may seem to others.
Covid has been a tragedy in innumerable ways, but would you mind sharing your thoughts on how has Covid affected your business in a positive way?
Covid has taught me many things and has definitely turned my life around just like many people in the world. During the first stay at home order I wasn’t able to work at my salon I was currently working at as a booth renter. When we were finally able to go back, I had to work limited days and hours due to occupancy restrictions. This killed my business in so many ways. I realized I needed to find a way I could continue to work and keep my guests and myself safer without the limitations. I had a friend reach out to me about an opportunity she came across about owning a salon suite. I immediately jumped on the opportunity to own my own salon space by myself. By doing this I could continue to work within the occupancy restrictions and my guest felt safe only being surrounded by me instead of multiple stylist and their clients. Outside of Covid owning your own salon suite is a big accomplishment, so for me to have done that during a pandemic has been a blessing for me and my family. If this pandemic didn’t happen, I also wouldn’t have created my newest business venture, The Bee Collection. When I had to stay home and not be able to go to the salon in the beginning of all of this, I started brainstorming on ways I could continue to help support my family without leaving my house. I had the idea to start a streetwear clothing line I could sell online. And with that The Bee Collection was created.
What do see in recent trends coming back in style?
Trends are always making a full circle; I’ve noticed a lot of 70’s style haircuts are definitely coming back in style. Curtain bangs and blunt cuts are super in right now. I’ve noticed the late 90’s early 2000’s hair color trends are back with bold contrast and dip dyed ends. I love seeing these iconic trends making their way back in to style.
How important is networking to you?
I believe networking is a huge part of being a business owner and entrepreneur! The famous saying “it’s not always about what you know, but who you know.” Has definitely proven itself true to me in many ways. I’ve had multiple opportunities given to me because someone who I knew, knew someone else. That’s how I got the opportunity to work at New York Fashion Week. I love meeting new people and you never know in the future if you might need that connection for yourself or someone else.
