Ariel, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
My name is Ariel Strickler and I am a Colorado Native. I attended Vanguard University of Southern California where I studied business and played collegiate volleyball. After graduating I made my way back to Colorado and attended College of International Esthetics. During beauty school I was introduced to lash extensions and fell in love with all things lashes. Soon after school I established BOLD N’ Bitchin’, a professional eyelash extensions business. BOLD N’ Bitchin’ continues to grow and we are excited to bring new things to the lash industry. We are focusing on and providing better lash trainings, greater lash business success, and for the first time, lash fitness (yes, this is life changing for lash artists). If you would of asked me 5 years ago what I would be doing, I would most likely of told you I was going to own my own business, but NEVER in a million years would I think a business in lash extensions; However, I love my job, I love what I do- and that’s all that matters!

You opened a second lash studio in June 2020 (the first day out of quarantine!), how is business?
At first, business was slow but was expected considering the circumstances. In June, people were still hesitant to leave their house, and not many people were ready to spend money after not working for weeks. At times I had a lot of anxiety and thought “what the eff did I do? Did I open too soon?” There was a lot of talk about multiple shutdowns, but thankfully that did not happen. It has been seven months since opening and we now have five Bitchin’ lash artists, we are expanding into virtual training, and are soon launching our own lash extension product line. Business is growing and we are very excited about it.

Why did you open a second lash location in the middle of a pandemic?
Honestly, I just wanted it SO bad. I wanted to have a second location for a long time. I admit, I jumped the gun. I was naïve thinking COVID was going to end in a week or two and we were going to go right back to “normal.” I had no idea how much of an impact COVID was going to have on my small business locally as well as the whole world economy. Prior to the pandemic, I had been searching for months for the perfect location and once the pandemic hit, lease availability nearly tripled. I found the location I wanted at a decent price and I could not pass up on the opportunity.

What can we expect to see from you in the 2021?
One Word. Bitchin’ I am so excited to announce I will be launching my own eyelash extension product line, as well as provide professional eyelash trainings and certifications. Our lash trainings will be in person, as well as on-line, so you can do them whenever and wherever you would like. You will also see more of us on YouTube, and other social media platforms. Our YouTube channel will provide information about anything lash extensions, as well as entrepreneurial tips and tricks, and lash fitness (yes, it’s important for all lash artists to avoid injury and burnout!). So, make sure to follow @boldnbitchinlash

What is unique about your lash extension product line?
The lash industry has BOOMED over the past few years and the competition is fierce. There are many different lash products on the market but it always seemed that my employees, customers, and I loved one product of one line, and loved another product of another line, or always wished we could “mix the two.” We have spent months and months testing lash products and talking with the manufacturers to create high quality lashes and accessories. We have also spent time assessing user-friendliness. One question we always ask is, “Does this make it easier for the lash artist?” The details are small, but they make a huge difference.

You mentioned you will be providing eyelash extension training as well as entrepreneurial (lash) tips and tricks, can you elaborate?
I am so glad you asked because this is something, I am very passionate about. Over the years I have seen some horrific lash work and I have heard numerous times, from other lash artists, how worthless their lash training was. Unfortunately, each state has different rules and regulations; some states do not have ANY requirements, you can literally order products online, teach yourself on YouTube and start lashing the next day. It is scary! Luckily, Colorado has strict rules and regulations regarding lash extensions- you must be licensed and certified. However, with or without rules and regulations people all over the world have decided to train and certify other lash artists. I have found several women offering trainings and certifications without state approval, eek! BOLD N’ Bitchin’ is in the process of getting state and board approved! Our trainings will also provide an entrepreneurial start up section. There is a misconception that once you are a lash artist you are going to start making six-figures and live your best life. Possible, but it is hard to achieve and even harder to maintain. Lashing takes years of practice, and even if you are the best lash artist on the block, if you do not know a lick about business then you are not on the road to success. Our trainings have a business lecture portion to set up our Bitchin’ lashers for the utmost success. YouTube videos, and downloads will be provided for lifelong use.

Lastly, why a lash business?
I graduated college with a business degree and shortly after graduating I attended beauty school. I worked in numerous spas right out of school and quickly realized I was working WAY too hard for what I was getting paid. Honestly, I felt like I was being robbed, and sadly, after I did my research, I discovered it seemed very common for spas to “push the boundaries” with unethical wages and subcontracting rules and regulations (all to save a dime). I quickly opened BOLD N’ Bitchin’ (which was actually inspired from a business plan written in college) and started growing my own business. I loved the empowerment of owning my own business and making my own money. Now, I am creating a business full of employees that want to grit and grind for long term success. My goal is for everyone to be fulfilled within their lash career and make great money along the way. I refuse to be the lash studio that pays slave labor rates to my hard working, Bitchin’ Lashers.
