Meet Ashley Vanley of Ashley Vanley Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Vanley.

Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a Colorado native, I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, my sophomore year of high school is when I started my photography business. I was photographing classmates senior portraits before I was even a senior myself, and doing it with a point and shoot camera none the less! A couple of years later my parents gifted me my first Canon DSLR camera as a graduation present. That’s when I began to truly fall in love with photography and bringing people joy through photos. I shot my first wedding in the living room of someones home in 2008, it was far from glamorous but I knew it was a step towards where I wanted to be. After graduation, I went to a photography school in Hawaii and did missionary work, living in places like South Africa, Thailand and Australia doing short term missions. Colorado was always considered my home because I had family and friends to go back to. In 2009 I shot my first real wedding and continued learning about the wedding industry and how to combine my missionary and photography experiences into my business. To date I have shot over 100 weddings and hope for many more!

I continued doing photography even when people said I couldn’t and would never make any money taking photos. I kept going when I saw other photographers who were better and more experienced than myself growing their business. I just focused on my own work and continued doing what I was passionate about people and photography.

More recently, my husband and I moved to the east coast, where I expanded my wedding portfolio and began to travel more often. My husband Aaron has been the biggest supporter and best business partner. Im so thankful for his help and everything he has done to make sure I get to live my dream! I have gone back and forth from the east coast to Colorado a lot and still do weddings and photo shoots there because thats where it all began!

I really enjoyed saving the beauty in a photograph, capturing a beautiful sunset or an exciting moment. I also fell in love with editing my photos and giving others joy through the finished product. I knew I wanted to get into the wedding industry as a wedding photographer and I sometimes pinch myself when I realize how far I’ve come and how thankful and blessed I am to do what I love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been smooth when I first started out I didn’t have a portfolio or very good equipment and my client base was close to zero. I didn’t want to go into debt to purchase better cameras or lenses so I would wait until I was paid for a wedding and then use that money to upgrade my equipment or put it back into my business. It was a long slow process but I learned a lot along the way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ashley Vanley Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
