Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Bedingfield.
Beth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My fitness story started early. I ran track and cross country at Pepperdine University. Fitness has always been a big part of my life. After graduating and having no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I did what felt natural at the time and began personal training while I figured out my career path. I had several injuries from running. While running one day, I ran past a Lagree studio that said: “first class free”.
I took my first class the next day and two months later I was certified to teach the method. I immediately fell in love with the method. It was so efficient and effective, yet didn’t hurt my body the way running had. After working in the LA market (where the method originated) for five years, I became a master instructor in the method, which meant I ran the certification program (and I also kept teaching).
Prior to becoming a master instructor I had looked at the Denver market to open a studio. I knew I wanted to open my own business within two months of teaching the Lagree method. I wasn’t quite ready to leave LA at that time. However, once my son was born, I wanted to be closer to family. I decided to finally make the move back to Denver and open my own studio in Lodo. I knew I wanted another modality to compliment the Lagree method. Because I had been through the Soul Cycle training, I considered opening a spin studio. However, I didn’t want to compete with the big market spin gyms that I knew would enter the market soon. So I decided to take my experience from Soul, and implement it into a Versa Climber group class. Booom, the birth of my climbing studio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, the road has been smooth. When you work in the industry for nearly ten years prior to opening your own business, you really know what to expect. I know not everyone’s story is the same, but for me, I knew how much work it was going to be opening a business, I knew how a successful business operated based of my experience, and I knew what worked and what didn’t. I knew how important marketing was for my business. I had enough experience that I knew exactly who my target demographic was, and I knew what I needed to do to grasp their attention.
Of course, moving from Los Angles (the MECCA of fitness) to Denver was a change. People work out for different reasons in Denver, and of course, customer patterns differ. But it didn’t take much time at all to learn my market and deliver what they wanted.
What I wasn’t ready for was all the delays that come from permits and construction. That was all new to me and extremely frustrating. I had no control over the delays, which made it worse.
Please tell us about Transform Colorado.
Transform Colorado is a fitness group class experience. We offer three different modalities of fitness. First, is the Lagree method. The method is performed on a megaformer where we use tension of a spring and a slow tempo to work every muscle group to failure. It is a full body workout. Most people who take this class for the first time are extremely taken back at the difficult of it. It is by far one of the most efficient and effective forms of fitness you can do for your body.
Second, we offer a Versa Climber group class. The class has the energy of a soul cycle class. It is a rhythm-based class. We move to the beat of the music. We have a custom made sculptural ceiling that is lit by a custom build light installation that reacts to the beat of the music. This class is 30 minutes long and you will burn up to 700 calories. What we love most about this workout is that it is NON-impact, full body, effective and efficient and puts absolutely no pressure on the joints or spine.
Lastly, we have a Hip-Hop yoga class. This class is done in an infrared heated room. We are the only studio in the Denver Metro area that uses infrared heat. The health benefits are superior than any other type of heat on the market. We are Denver’s FIRST music inspired infrared heated yoga class. This vinyasa based flow is paired with the sounds of Drake, Kayne West, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead that creates the perfect post sweat GLOW.
I am the most proud of my amazing community. When you build something you love some much and put so much passion behind the product, it is the most gratifying and for me, humbling experience to have a community that believes in and loves your vision as much as you do. My staff is loyal and hard working. My business would not be what it is without the staff I have. Different than every other fitness studio I have work in, we all love each other and care a lot about the success of each other.
As a business owner, it was important for me to curate what I was doing. I wanted to create a lifestyle brand, rather than just a place people wanted to workout in. Sure other studios may have yoga or lagree, but I wanted people to feel differently when they walked in my door. From the branding to the marketing to how the customer is greeted upon walking in, I wanted every tiny detail to matter and to curate an experience for every customer.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
As far as creating the business model I don’t think I would do one thing differently. I went into this business venture very confident because I had a lot of experience in the field. I’m extremely proud of my business and don’t think I would change one thing I have done differently.
