Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Bell.
Hi Brett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am a Denver native, raised in the Denver, Montbello suburb. I am a husband of 10 years and father of 2, a boy & a girl. I know that it sounds cliche but being a father is the best thing in the world! My family gives me the motivation that I need to go out and use the gifts that I’ve been given for the benefit of others!
My journey hasn’t always been so clear for me. I started out shooting music videos off of a camcorder and I wanted to transition into more serious, cinematic style film so I purchased a DSLR camera. In the beginning, I had no interest in ever getting involved in photography seriously but over time I started to make a transition and I have not regretted that decision one bit. I’m most proud that I never gave up on a passion that I didn’t know was there and I’ve continued to learn and be a student of the craft.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been incredibly frustrating at times. I didn’t always have the best equipment so it took me a while to learn certain techniques.
I am pretty much a self-taught photographer. Not having a lot of money to invest in education of photography, I learned a lot of what I know online by researching and reading numerous tips & techniques and also watching a ton of YouTube videos, a trait that I follow to this day! Taking the route of self-education slowed up the process of networking with people in more skilled positions such as mine and I struggled to photograph actual people because I couldn’t prove my skillset without much of a portfolio.
Even as I began to build a portfolio, not having that network of skilled individuals forced me to have to prove my worth. A breakthrough came in 2019 into 2020 during the pandemic. I spent a little over a year providing my services for free for the sole purpose of building a portfolio and strengthening my skills. That was by far the best decision that I made on my journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a portrait photographer based in Denver, Colorado specializing in Beauty, Fashion, and Editorial Portraiture using a range of different lighting techniques, in-studio and on-location to achieve insane, outside-of-the-norm portraits producing a multitude of looks by manipulating color and shadows.
How do you think about happiness?
What I absolutely love about photography is starting with a blank canvas and creating something that wasn’t previously there.
I am a passionate portrait photographer that always wants to do something out of the norm. I don’t care to do what others are doing, I want my work to always be unique and stand out! I love to experiment and I am not scared to do so. I love the creativity that can come from freezing a moment in time with a camera!
