Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Owens.
Brett, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a kid, my mom would always let me be the one to light and blow out the candles. Whether that was for a birthday or a Christmas party, I was always the one to claim that little role. Most kids just like playing with fire. However, I don’t think it was the fire itself that I was interested in, but the act of creating something from nothing, light from the darkness. Then, getting to go around the house and extinguish all of them, like it was my birthday all over again.
After I graduated college in 2014 and had a lot of free time, I started making candles as a hobby and a necessity. I don’t believe in ghosts, but I have a theory that old homes somehow carry the smells of years and years of stir fry dinners and shaggy dogs. In the case of our home, over 100 years of that. Our house had so many unique smells, and most of them were not welcoming, especially when you wanted to impress your girlfriend (now wife).
I can’t stand most candles you buy at the store because they’re either way too artificial or they make me way too hungry (I’m looking at you maple pecan pie candle). Selfishly, I wanted to make candles that I actually liked, and in some way combined familiar with the unexpected. The first candle scent I made was Lavender + Balsam, and following that, Rosemary + Cedar.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. I had no business experience, only a degree in communication, and I am still figuring out what that actually means.
Lately, I have been wrestling with the saying, “how you do anything is how you do everything.” As a mostly one-man business, it’s a constant challenge in effectively juggling candle making, fulfilling orders, marketing, testing new products, accounting, and catching up on those never-ending emails. In my mind, I feel like I am accomplishing everything, albeit very poorly. At the end of the day, however, if the customer is happy with their product, whatever I am doing must be working. Even if it seems like total chaos at all times.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am the owner and head maker for a candle company called Light Provisions. There are thousands of candle companies who all purchase their fragrances from a dozen or so suppliers, which means there are a lot of doubles out there. While it’s often time-consuming and cost extensive, we try to custom blend our own fragrances that are familiar and grounded in nature, while still being completely unique. Creating interesting scents like Tobacco + Walnut or Sweetgrass + Juniper gives us the ability to show you a pairing you may have never considered, but can work on so many levels.
While I am obsessed with fragrances and the always interesting ways to blend and create new memories, I think I am most passionate about creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. My wife and I went on our honeymoon to Norway and I was so impressed with how they had candles burning literally everywhere we went. From dive bars to restaurants, there wasn’t a place where they weren’t burning. Besides creating wonderful scents, I mostly want to bring that sense of light and warmth back from Norway, and the best way is through candles.
