Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Bell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story starts as a young woman from Wasilla, Alaska who decided to come stateside and pursue my nursing degree in Pueblo, CO. I grew up around very strong women in their fields of work and aspired to do the same. After a semester of study, it became clear that nursing wasn’t going to ignite my passion. So, I went looking for something different and got an interview with the local Buckle Store in the Pueblo Mall. Buckle, to this day, is one of the best places to acquire a business mindset through on the job training in sales, teamwork, & leadership. I worked with this company for four years and came across an opportunity that changed my life forever. Centennial Real Estate was hiring for a local Specialty Leasing Manager for Pueblo Mall and what a blessing it was because this was the next layer of how I will help someone next. As Specialty Leasing Manager it’s my job to connect with local businesses and put them in front of the millions of visitors we have each year at the mall, that could mean an advertising banner, a pop up event, a hallway kiosk to sell product or even a short term store location. My program focuses on the business and the owner and how we can assist in creating stepping stones to their success. Not only does this position challenge me daily but it is the most rewarding feeling at the end of the day knowing that your team helped someone local grow and succeed especially in 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No one successful will ever say that the road was smooth on their journey to success. Getting to where you want to be is never easy. Each one of us on that road goes through different challenges. My ongoing challenge but blessing in disguise is being not only the youngest in my company but being younger than all my tenants. Being & looking so young I definitely faced struggles in earning my tenants respect which I eventually gained by running a professional, consistent, & fair business each day. It wasn’t easy at first but after many great negotiations and by acting as a partner in their business, I was able to help them understand the culture we were trying to build, and ultimately with them over. At the end of the day, it was OUR success that helped them get past my age and make them respect me for who I am. That was the best reward. I am grateful for every challenge along my business journey.
Please tell us about the company.
As a Specialty Leasing Manager, my job is to find small business owners looking to grow through a presence in our mall. That includes marketing opportunities, leasing, and more. We have a saying for my program, and it states,” We don’t fill spaces, we fulfill spaces”. That means finding a tenant that fits as well in the community as it does in the floor plan. After all, we can only be as successful as our retailers.
Centennial is by far the best company I have ever worked for. We take care of our tenants every day with respect and grace and our company treats us the same. The one point out of many that I think sets my company apart from others is we understand the meaning of “Teamwork makes the Dream Work” which drives each team member to combine expertise to continue the evolution of Pueblo Mall as the BEST regional one stop shop for local and national brand shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality and characteristic that I think is the most important to my success is to never lose sight of the culture I am trying to create and making sure nothing in my program stays stagnant. Change is healthy and having a business with constancy and growth is evident.
