Meet Crystal Hatch of Club Calisthenics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Hatch.

Crystal, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story is definitely one that has progressed, grown and changed over the years. I started out fresh out of college with a degree in graphic design and once I moved to Denver, I began to get interested in different fitness methods. I’ve always been passionate about movement, from Krav Maga to yoga, to gymnastics strength training. Finally, I found bodyweight and calisthenics and fell in love.

My interest in marketing and branding helped me to develop my first business, Awaken Adult Gymnastics, which I co-founded with my ex. After running that business for six years, my personal relationship with the other owner ended and caused me to re-evaluate my business partnership. My sister, Holly, has always worked closely with me in marketing through all my ventures, so it was a pretty easy decision to team up with her to create our next business.

Club Calisthenics has been years in the making and is a product of the best fitness products out there. As an online coach for GymFit (GymnasticBodies) and then as an owner of Awaken where I hosted professionals and athletes from around the world – from yogis, hand balancers, calisthenics pros, gymnastic professionals, and performers, I knew I had the opportunity to create something that took the best from everyone I learned from and trained with.

Club Calisthenics also represents finding empowerment through loss, and as an NPD survivor, Club Calisthenics also represents my goal to help people find love and movement in their bodies, regardless of what they look like, or where they start. Holly and I really believe in a community-driven business, one that feels like home, for whoever joins. A place where people connect with their bodies, and themselves, and find movement and fun through skill and strength-based workouts. My vision for a thriving fitness community has become my life’s work and a never-ending passion.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road of entrepreneurship and fitness has most definitely been one of transformation and struggle. Each challenge and roadblock really helps remind me of why I do this… because it’s hard, and I’ve always been motivated by challenges. Running a business beats you down, it scares you and the pressures come in from every direction. But I have a daily mantra that helps me through it all: If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

I remember I have a responsibility to not only my team but to the community and world at large. If you have something that you’ve found to be transformational, you MUST share it… because it is your legacy and your responsibility. It’s been a struggle to find footing as a female business owner in a male-dominated industry, absolutely. It’s hard to be taken seriously or to stand up alongside some of the strongest professionals in the industry and find your worth. I’ve struggled to balance my work with my personal life, and have often found myself missing out on social outings and healthy relationships because my love for, and drive for my businesses always seem to lead my heart and is the focus of my energy.

It’s hard to maintain a blend of learning new things while sticking true to your vision. My body-image is constantly challenged by what the media expects from me as a fitness professional, but bigger than that is the body image that surrounds the fitness industry in general. We are constantly struggling to remind people that there isn’t one definition of beauty, strength, or perseverance. It exists in all of us, in all shapes and forms. Our unique characteristics and limitations also can become our strengths. There is no body-shaming in our vision at Club Calisthenics, and we don’t praise weight loss, or physical change, because it is triggering and emotional for so many of us. We don’t objectify people’s bodies, but we celebrate the way they move. We want to change the way fitness exists in our minds… we want to empower people to be active because of what it allows them to DO with their bodies, not because of what their bodies look like.

Please tell us about Club Calisthenics.

Regardless of your skill level, we’ll help you build a body that can move better while playing with some fun skills at the same time.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My childhood memories are filled with moments of creativity and outdoor play. I found so much excitement in the world around me, and relished in making things with flowers, grass, and rocks, or chasing lizards, bunnies, and frogs. I have always been curious about the world around me and loved experiencing every bit of it!

I have always had a vivid imagination, one that wakes me up at night, and one that keeps me motivated to learn and create something unique. As an artist, my dreams have had a big impact on my creativity, or the vivid, dark hours right before sleep. I’ve always been sensitive to the world and it finds its way into my art, whether marketing and design or a concept for the look and feel of a room in my home. There are so many memories of sunshine, cartwheels and handstands in the mountains, and playing in streams catching tad-poles.
