Meet David Cooke of DC Weddings

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Cooke.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am professionally known as DJ DC, owner of DC Weddings. I am a father to two beautiful girls and a husband to a wonderful wife! I started recording mixed tapes when I was seven on a tape player with dubbing features. I fell in love with music and decided at a young age (seven years old) to pursue a career in music. I began DJing for pool/block parties in Dallas, Texas when I was 11 years old. By the age of 14, I began to DJ my family and friends weddings via word of mouth. I soon moved with my family to Denver, CO where I continued playing for my family and friends. In 1998, I bought my first set of turntables and it was GAME ON! I worked very hard to learn my craft: the “art form” of mixing songs together, and “beat-matching.” It was a ton of work to make a name for myself, as well as building my clientele via networking, but because of my efforts (and God’s grace), I met some amazing people that gave me an opportunity to perform for a large array of Night Clubs across the Front Range. I became a professional wedding disc jockey in 2005, working at the Lookout Mountain Crystal Rose Event Center. During that time, I was able to solely focus on weddings and private/corporate events. I also performed for Starkey Productions for three years. Working for both companies helped me to expand my experience and expertise, as well as help me to build my confidence to start my own business.

Currently, I am djing weddings and private events booked via DC Weddings across Colorado, and I am also working alongside Jennifer Lane (owner of Memory Lane Events, LLC). I have worked with her for over six years. We have worked many amazing events together. In 2008, I started my residency for Dominic Roybal, at the “Retro Room Lounge and Bar” in Denver, Colorado. Since then, he has expanded his business to two other venues: the “Side Car Lounge,” and “The Refinery.” I currently reside at the Refinery playing a five hour “throw down” once a month!

Georgia Cates stated: “Music is what emotions sound like.” I strongly agree with that statement! I believe that DC Weddings provides the utmost skill and passion to make a couple’s BIG DAY beautiful.

Thank you Pops and Nona for all your support! I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for YOU TWO! And a BIG Thank You to all my family and friends for the support you have given me throughout all these years!!!! I Love You All! God has truly blessed me and my career!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One struggle was to figure out how to transfer all my music into a computer and to also find a reliable dj program. I had started my dj career with cassette tapes. Later, I transitioned into compact discs and eventually progressed into turntables/vinyl, and now I’m DJing via computers. Every wedding/event that I had previously performed at, I would move several books of CDs and crates of records in addition to all my equipment.

I had spent thousands of dollars over the years to increase my music collection in records and CDs, and I have spent hours/years transcribing music from cds and vinyl into mp3s. I am very grateful to my family and friends who have supported me throughout the years by helping me build my music collection.

Another struggle was to learn the appropriate time for me to research music for all my weddings/events while accomplishing my personal expectations of myself as a father/husband to my family.

Please tell us about DC Weddings.
In 2009, I registered my business (DC Weddings) with the state of Colorado and expanded my horizons by performing for a number of big events. I am very proud of how fast my business has grown (via “word of mouth”) over the years! In 2018, I made the decision to open my business to the public and create a website that will be launched in 2019. DC Weddings is very personal business! I am with the couple/client from the beginning of the planning stages to the end of the event. I help give all possible options so they can make a knowledgeable choice about their music choices and timeline. When their “Comfort Meeting” is over, my clients are excited and at peace with the choices they’ve made. Many brides that I have catered to have spoken very highly of DC Weddings and have recommended DC Weddings for many weddings/events! I specialize in creating a fun-loving, positive, and energetic environment for all occasions! I have over 20 years of experience in DJing weddings, night clubs and big festivals.

My goal is to build an enterprise that will be innovative, creative, and responsive- teaching the next generation the art of reading a crowd, being responsive to peoples’ needs instantly while keeping a good attitude with integrity.

I have learned that success comes from being prepared, by doing lots of homework, knowing my playlist, knowing newly released music, song speeds (bpm), crowd reaction, and timing.

I love being a DJ. It is my passion and gift, which is made clear to my clients by my words and actions!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have started my website sooner. I would have liked to transition into a computer sooner to save time, money, and “manpower” of moving so much equipment (i.e., CD players, turntables, numerous CD books, record crates, etc.)!

I should have also sought out a mentor earlier in my career.
