Today we’d like to introduce you to Dezirae Maffit.
Dezirae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started life as a single child of a single mother who had to work very hard for many years just to make ends meet (I now have a brother and many other half-siblings). My father was in and out of my life growing up but the few memories I have of our time together have stuck with me to this day and heavily impacted the person I’ve become. I specifically remember a car ride up to the city (Chicago) for the weekend with him and singing along to a John Legend CD together with the entire way. Even now, 15 years later, John Legend is still my favorite artist and a great inspiration to my songwriting. I remember those small moments influencing my dreams to be a singer one day. I did everything I could in the following years to pursue that path – singing in three different choirs every year, entering vocal competitions, and finally attending college.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance and went on to teach private voice and piano lessons for several years. There was a large period of time in my college/early adult years that I strayed from my dream, mainly from lack of self-confidence. But about two years ago, I finally acknowledged that this career path I was on was unfulfilling in many ways. It was at about this time that I finally started to rebuild my relationship with my dad, too, although I’m not sure whether one inspired the other. Not long after, I decided to move somewhere fresh, where I was unknown and I could really make a name for myself as a professional musician. So far, Denver has proven to be the perfect location for me to start this new path.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like I imagine, many millennial women, I struggled with self-image issues, anxiety, and depression for many years. It took therapy and lots of emotional growth to find the version of myself that I am today. Career-wise, there have been more setbacks than I can remember. For example, I spent over a year finding my true sound and style. I released a full album under my actual name and, after a year of performing that music, realized it just wasn’t reaching people because it wasn’t genuine to me. We had numerous shows that kind of tanked from people not connecting with the music. It didn’t suit my voice and it wasn’t from the heart.
Then with COVID, we inevitably faced struggles. For a while, I went back and forth with whether or not I had a future as a performer because there was no opportunity to play live and people still weren’t connecting with my original music. I also lost my job at a local recording studio during the quarantine months but rather than choosing to give up, I finally had the time to take a hard look at what was and wasn’t working and by June, I rebranded into DZIRAE GOLD. Since the rebranding, gigging has picked up drastically to at least a few shows a week! And we’re releasing our first single this Monday!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My partner and I make up our little band, DZIRAE GOLD. We are known for our live music and hopefully, soon will be known for our professional recordings as well. We have a special sound that people gravitate towards. I have a very rich voice which performs well on old jazz standards and blues, so of course, we cover those but add a slightly more modern style. We also take current and a few throwback pop songs and turn them a few shades sexier with our special soulful twist.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment so far has been releasing our first single. It’s a scary process to release and promote music. From playlist submissions, press release circulation, and planning a release party, it became overwhelming at times. But now that a lot of the hard work is behind us, we are feeling so pleased and proud of what we’ve created and are even more excited about the next release!
