Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug McGhee.
Doug, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After college, I jumped in the business world and created success in most all of my roles. Selling copiers led me to finance which led me to commercial banking which ultimately led me to mortgage banking and co-founding a mortgage firm. Throughout my professional life in finance and mortgage banking, I learned the value and impact of personal and leadership development.
My appetite to understand the power as well as the limitation of the mind at a very early age was unquenchable and I leveraged my appetite to create and generate success in business and athletics. This took me down a crazy & wonderful path of self-exploration for the last 2o years. I integrated what I learned both personally and professionally. It was not always pixie dust and unicorns. The path is uncertain and requires courage and a massive vision and desire to grow.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any journey or travel, there were challenging times as well as graceful times. In hindsight, there is no doubt that I grew more and learned more from the challenges. As a business owner and provider, oftentimes, I felt alone like no one else understood the pressures and details in leading and growing a company to become a success. And by success not only financial but an environment and culture for employees and customers to thrive.
The inherent challenges: cash flow, payroll, human resources, compliance, sales, accounting, legal, the relationships with my business partners and trying and desperately wanting to balance all of this with family and my personal life was not easy. In looking back I can see now what I stand for today, who I am today and what I am doing today, would have been incredibly valuable to me 20 years ago when I was in the heat of the battle. For any business owner who is responsible for the welfare and well being of other families, they will understand what I am referring to. What I eventually discovered and why I made a commitment to my own personal development and what I do today, was that I realized the power of the mind and our belief system, or said differently the software that runs the hardware.
What we believe, or our perspective, can be influenced and programmed to produce our desired reality regardless of what has occurred and is occurring. I played with this in my training as a triathlete and then began to apply it to my life. Simply having a neutral resource that was my advocate would have been tremendous relief. Someone who would simply listen and challenge my thinking and proactively offer another perspective. Instead, I lost myself and used my training as an athlete to sedate what I was unwilling to feel or look at. In essence, I ran and hid from what would be an inevitable confrontation.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Realm.Men is the only online personal development system for men committed to creating and experiencing breakthroughs in their personal and professional lives. When I created Realm.Men I decided there were thousands of coaches and programs and if I was going to enter this space, I would deliver a lifestyle and a community not just a program or a workshop. We are a community with peer group accountability and the consistent delivery of content that builds day by day and assignments that apply the learnings so that each man is learning by experience. Not just more information.
The final piece is time and energy blocking which means over a period of time men understand this is their life on a daily basis and they begin to make time and put attention into doing the work and are supported by other men. 80% of online courses don’t produce the intended results mostly because there is no accountability or coach who can and will go off script to support someone’s unique challenge. Often times what happens is: “Pay me the money, I’ll give you the keys, now good luck!” This model does not work for most. Or it is not sustainable or results-driven. The common problem for men is that they are lying or misguided about who they are and what they really want.
Once they are vulnerable and have permission to let their guard down men begin to open and trust. They realize they are not alone. I hear this time and time again. What is different with Realm.Men is that the results for my clients are accelerated. Why because of five factors: 1) Consistency – daily assignments. 2) Community- peer groups & like-minded professionals 3) Accountability- personal responsibility and accountability to other peers and to me as their coach. 4) Application & Integration- exercises and assignments that ground and integrate their daily learnings. 5) Commitment- scheduled & committed energy and time blocks for personal self-reflection.
What I have come to understand for me and most men is the growth is accelerated when these five conditions are present. I am most proud of following my heart and being committed to a purpose and a vision that is growing into a magnetic movement and is creating breakthroughs and impact for men across the country. Ultimately Realm.Men is about personal empowerment, awareness and relationships. We can all be better and grow in all of these areas.
What were you like growing up?
Quiet, observant, confident, introverted, competitive and self assured. I loved to play games and sports and when I wasn’t active I was amazed the the concept of infinity and wonder about what was beyond all the stars that I could see at night.
