Today we’d like to introduce you to Dusty Orrantia.
Dusty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After a year of motorcycling through Latin America and Southeast Asia, with my now wife Riley, we landed in Boulder, Colorado. Humbled and inspired to contribute to the positive transformation of our planet, we decided to go back to school. Riley wanted to become an environmental attorney with a focus in renewable energy, and I decided to finish my undergrad focusing on cultural anthropology while studying alternative health.
I began to work closely with an acupuncturist friend of mine who opened the door for me to a different realm of health and well being. In addition, my wife’s mother who comes from a Hawaiian-Japanese background introduced me to Reiki, an ancient healing tradition that works with the energetics of the body that is well known today. This catapulted me into the alternative health world where I sought out energy workers, shamans and manual therapists in search of my role to the greater community.
Fast forward a few years, I have completed my undergrad and was halfway through the application process of entering Southwest Acupuncture College to study Chinese Medicine. Just before I committed, a doctor/mentor recommended that I look into Rolfing®, considering I had been living in Boulder and that was the hub for Structural Integration. My initial thoughts were, “what is that??” Rolfing® Structural Integration? Soon enough, I walked into the ‘Dr. Ida Rolf Institute’ and expressed my inquiry in search of more information. At that moment, the clinic coordinator said, “well today is your lucky day because we are looking for clients to participate in our student clinic and receive a ’10-series’ at a discounted price. There is no better way to figure out what Rolfing® is than to experience the powerful process first hand.” The rest is history.
After the ten-session series, I was completely transformed and my vision became clear. The potency of the work inspired me, to a point where I would walk out of the building after sessions and literally jump and scream with joy. This is no exaggeration. My wife can attest because she decided to experience the process with me. I was not quite sure what was happening, but I knew things were transforming and manifesting on a deep level. I had clarity of mind, mobility in my lower back and hips that I never knew would be possible, my athletic performance was enhanced, and my energy levels increased substantially. The structural work I received had a prolonged, lasting effect and continued to help integrate my mind and body, well after I received the 10-series. It seemed as if Rolfing® had found me and I could not deny its power. I then knew this was the right fit for me. I had to become certified and share the work that changed my life on so many levels, with others seeking freedom in their lives.
In addition to being a certified Rolfer™, I have a background in bio-energetics and am a certified Reiki practitioner. I continue to educate myself on health and human development while studying alongside of Fitness Professionals, Acupuncturists, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Yogis, Reiki Practitioners, and other talented SI Practitioners and Manual Therapists. I am extremely enthusiastic about my work and have gladly accepted I will be a student of health and wellness for the duration of my life journey. I am grateful to co-exist with my beautiful wife Riley, and two dogs, Doogie and Panther. I enjoy my personal yoga practice, competing in city softball and basketball leagues, as well as, golf and disc golf. I am currently practicing at Core Progression, a training facility in Northglenn, CO which compliments the work I offer, to help people meet their personal goals. When I am not in the office, I am most likely out on the field playing ball or exploring the majestic mountains I consider my ‘backyard.’
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Making a living as a body worker seemed challenging initially, but I feel anyone can accomplish anything they set their mind to. So here I am, financially stable, not burnt ou,t and enthusiastic about the work I offer.
Getting out of my own way was the biggest obstacle for me on my road to success and I am still working on that currently.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DO Rolfing – what should we know?
I am a certified Rolfer™. Rolfing® Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that looks at the body differently than traditional western modalities.
I hold space for people to make change.
With a skillful, listening touch, I work with the fascia, connective tissues, nervous system, bones and joints of the body to increase range of motion, mobility, and fluidity within the body’s physical, emotional, and energetic levels.
Rolfing® Structural Integration is a profound system of bodywork that applies hands-on-therapy and movement education to improve structural alignment and functional performance. The objective of Rolfing® is to re-align the structure to provide lasting relief from pain, poor posture, and chronic stress. Rolfing’s holistic approach effectively enhances balance, strength, and mobility within the body. It can also assist in restoring freedom of movement, increase athletic performance, as well as, improve mind-body awareness and coordination.
Rolfing® is not, as many people think, deep tissue massage. Rolfing has an age-old reputation for being painful. This is not the case with my practice. My ultimate goal is to provide a comfortable environment for my client to make change and relieve pain and tension, not create it.
Rather than working within a relaxation paradigm, Rolfing works within a transformative paradigm. It is a creative process that enables further evolution, within the being, on multiple levels.
Rolfing is most effective in the context of a series of sessions. This cumulative process allows us to build upon the sessions prior, which provides us with better insight on the deeper postural restrictions and movement patterns. The more we work together, the more we discover layers of availability.
Classically, Rolfing has been delivered in a 10-session series that addresses the entire body, front-back, side-to-side, top-to-bottom. In the “10-series” treatment plan, the client and practitioner aim to systematically re-sculpt the body’s major segments (feet, legs, pelvis, back, etc.) in order to relieve strain from accidents, injuries, and over, or misuse of body mechanics. When these segments are sculpted into a new shape and form, they will subsequently work differently and harmoniously, allowing for new possibilities of alignment and function.
Although ten sessions are recommended, most people experience very positive results just after one session. Whether it’s one session or ten, Rolfing® can be extremely beneficial to the individual’s overall health and well being. Although some folks are hesitant to commit to all ten, three sessions can often be a good start. I encourage folks to try the initial three sessions as a way of determining whether the work is meeting their goals and expectations.
Healthier alignment tends to relieve most painful symptoms and increase energy and vitality. By improving economic energy expenditure, the body will only be using the energy appropriate for a particular function and not compensating by recruiting unnecessary muscles to maintain a posture or pattern that no longer serves the body. Many clients use Rolfing® to manage both acute and chronic pain. This unique approach is often very beneficial and might not require the completion of a full series, although it is recommended.
Clients are usually more active in the Rolfing process than with other types of bodywork. The work becomes more effective as clients participate in ways such as performing specific movements or noticing their internal experience. The more the client can step into the new sensations created in sessions, the more the results will last.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife and life partner Riley. She is like a mirror to me, guiding me with unconditional love and support every day.
I have had numerous family members, coaches, teachers, and mentors influence me and they all know who they are. The list would be too long to list. Anyone I encounter could be considered a teacher in some way shape or form. Thanks humanity.
Thank you Mom, Dad, Nick and Zack. Love you guys.
