Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Pahl.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sometimes what seems like a crisis turns out to be the best thing ever. I was laid off from my medical editing job in 2012 and decided to turn my part-time baking hobby into my full-time job. Whipped Bakery officially launched in February of 2013 and has been growing exponentially ever since.
I grew up baking with my mom and grandma, and some of my best childhood memories were times spent baking and decorating sugar cookies with my mom. Obviously not even close to the level that I do now, but it had to start somewhere! My mom and grandma are/were very skilled artists, and I always thought that gene skipped over me. My attempts at painting were laughable! Turns out I just needed a different medium!
My mom created, owned, and operated a successful business so it never occurred to me to hesitate when starting my own. In our family, it’s a great thing to take risks, and my mom showed me by example that I could do it. I never even thought about how it might be less common to be a “girl boss” because it was the norm my whole life. Failure for any reason wasn’t an option because I know that if you work really hard and work through problems, you can succeed. It’s never easy, but it’s worth it.
Has it been a smooth road?
I find it hard to believe that any road for a business owner is smooth. When I first started, there was a pretty constant level of anxiety regarding how to promote the business and earn enough to make up for the income I was bringing into our family. Thankfully that isn’t as much of a worry anymore, but now I have to check myself pretty hard because comparison is the thief of joy. In this business, especially, it’s so easy to look at your work and judge it against someone else’s work. There will always be someone better than you. There are always new techniques to learn and ways to grow. Also, just like most people (who own their own business or not), time is always a struggle. There’s just never enough time to fulfill orders while also maintaining everything on the back end as well as being a wife, mom, daughter, friend, and the other roles I play. I have to give myself a lot of grace, and thankfully, I surround myself with those who are willing to do the same for me.

Whipped Bakery is a full-service, home-based bakery in Littleton specializing in custom-decorated sugar cookies, custom cakes, cupcakes, brownies, breads/pastries, pies, and more.
