Meet Emily Weinkauf of Cedar Hair Studio in Berkeley/Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Weinkauf.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from cosmetology school in 2011 and began working at a brand new salon in Lohi. I had the opportunity to see a now very successful salon grow from the ground up and be a part of that excitement. I decided pretty early on that I wanted to specialize in color, so I put all my time and energy into attending education all over the country and honing my skill in blondes and balayage. About six years in, I started taking on apprentices and teaching them everything I knew about the industry. This is when I realized how much I enjoyed leadership; lighting a fire in new stylists to become the best they can be. That’s when I knew I had to open my own salon. The whole process from budding idea to opening day took about a year and a half, a lot of 15-18 hour days (between taking clients, working on business plans, projections and designing and building out the space) and, to be completely honest, a lot of tears and meltdowns. There were a lot of moments where I thought it was all going to fall apart but it didn’t, it was so worth it! Now, we’ve been open for about six months and I’m really enjoying everything about business ownership.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, things went pretty smoothly. In a city like Denver where we’re bursting at the seams with growth, you definitely see a lot of construction projects get behind schedule. We ended up about four months behind from what we had planned. Consequently, I had to do hair in a temporary space for about a month while I waited for inspections to be completed. We ended up not knowing if we’d be able to open until about 12 hours beforehand. It was quite the anxiety-ridden ride!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cedar Hair Studio – what should we know?
Cedar is a thoughtfully designed, environmentally conscious salon specializing in blonding and balayage, as well as textured cuts and men’s grooming. Our stylists are all very passionate about the industry, advanced education, and truly connecting with likeminded people while dishing out the best hair in Denver. We’re also looking forward to connecting with our community through workshops and fundraising events; this winter, we did a really fun wreath-making workshop in our space where we served wine and snacks and made fresh-foliage wreaths with a local florist. We’ll definitely be doing more events like that in the near future.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel has been essential to your success?
I LOVE people. I love connecting with new people and digging deeper. And I love building bonds and lifelong friendships with my clients. Also, I’m like, insanely obsessive – sometimes this is a hindrance, but for the most part it has benefited Cedar, thus far.
