Meet Hannah Oreskovich of BolderBeat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Oreskovich.

Hannah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
BolderBeat started in 2016 as a way to give a voice to Colorado’s thriving music and arts scene. At the time, there were not many publications focused on local music coverage in the Denver area and I felt it was very important to start giving the music community a platform to share their work. There are exceptional pockets of talented artists throughout Colorado’s Front Range, and while we cover as many of them as we’re able to, Denver is where we provide the most local coverage due to its breadth of music venues.

BolderBeat is primarily a discovery source for Colorado’s music scene. We premiere new music, interview artists, and cover local and national shows and music festivals. Due to our talented contributors, we’re often the first place new Colorado music and artists are published. We love giving that first exposure to artists and our contributors are passionate about sharing the music and events they love.

Beyond giving the local arts community a platform, BolderBeat also gives its volunteer contributor base the chance to cut their journalistic chops and gain concert photography experience. We’re very proud that many of our contributors have gone on to work with VICE News, National Public Radio (NPR), Vogue, Superfly Presents, The Denver Post, 5280 Magazine, 303 Magazine, Denver Westword, and more.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always challenges in any new venture and BolderBeat is no exception. For example, when I first started BolderBeat, I had no idea how to gain access to various venues to cover concerts. I started out photographing and interviewing artists in coffee shops and at open mic nights by myself. I was the only contributor for the first three months of the publication’s existence and I was writing every night so that we would have regular content.

Over time, and through the hard work of our many contributors, BolderBeat started to make industry connections and cover bigger events. Our publication also started to gain a loyal following, which allowed us to request bigger shows. Now, we have a Colorado team, as well as a team in Los Angeles who cover events there. Our contributors have also covered several national music festivals including: Bonnaroo, Grandoozy, Electric Forest, KAABOO Del Mar, Lightning in a Bottle, Pitchfork, Sasquatch, SXSW, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and more. We’re also Red Rocks regulars, which is something we’re extremely grateful to have the opportunity to keep doing here in Colorado. It’s been amazing to watch our publication transform into what it is today.

BolderBeat – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets us apart from other music blogs and publications is our focus on discovery. As mentioned, we’re oftentimes the very first publication to publish an artist’s work. For us, that’s everything! We know how hard musicians, artists, and other creatives work because many of us fall into one of those roles ourselves outside of our work with BolderBeat. As such, we love being the publication that gives someone that first public recognition, and we hope it’s motivating for those featured to continue pushing for larger press opportunities and to keep creating their amazing art.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To quote the legendary Bob Dylan, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” For us, that goes for anyone and is the ultimate goal of success. It’s one reason we give artists a platform- many of them work other jobs to support themselves and our hope is that by helping them share the pieces of their life they’re most passionate about, someday they’ll be doing a lot more of what they love full time. The same goes for our contributors. All of us have other jobs outside of BolderBeat, but many of us have found our place in the media industry or creative world after honing skill sets at BolderBeat that we could take elsewhere. If you can get to a point where you love what you’re doing most of the day, I don’t think there’s anything more you can ask for.
