Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Green.
Heather, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
“SO WE FLEW TO INDIA & THE AIRLINE LOST OUR LUGGAGE… THAT IS HOW MONIE BUG BEGAN.”
It was almost a ten-hour drive from the airport to our sister’s village and it was going to take two days for the airline to deliver our bags. As soon as we arrived at her home, she grabbed a tape measure and, one hour later, presented our daughter with a stunning party dress. The Monie Bug concept was born that moment and now our other two sisters have joined the team. Monie Bug Fashion is a handmade, fair trade children’s clothing line that launched in Aurora, Colorado in 2018. Our purpose is to bring beautiful, reasonably-priced clothing to children while building sustainable change & empowerment through fair working conditions in India. All clothing is handmade by women artisans in India and we plan on adding more team members as we grow.
Initially, our designs offered only toddler-sized dresses (2T-5T) but we have now expanded to include larger sizes (up to 10/12) and boys’ vests. At this time, we only sell online.
Monie Bug (pronounced Mōnē Bug) is our daughter Simone’s nickname… she has always been as cute as a bug.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth at all. It has been a real struggle trying to get the word out about our clothing. Unlike big-box apparel lines, we have a unique story that is hard to tell on a traditional, retail platform. In late 2018, we did a trunk show at a high-end children’s boutique and didn’t sell one piece. The patrons seemed to love our products but never purchased anything. The owner of the shop suggested we raise our prices (which we did not do) and also find a way to share our story and vision with others while selling…perhaps home parties. We are still trying to find our way into this unique market.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Monie Bug Fashion – what should we know?
Our specialty is toddler party dresses. The combination of vibrant, Indian fabrics and contemporary design is our standard. All of the clothing is fully lined (many party dresses are triple-lined) and handmade. We are passionate about empowering women in India through fair wages. When women earn a fair wage they can afford to send their children to school, have enough money to save for their family, they keep money in their local economies and become leaders in the community. Fairtrade empowers women and Monie Bug pays our women artisans 395% above the area-average wage…that is what we are most proud of.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The Denver Blizzard of ’82. My cousin and I were stranded at my house and it was Christmas. My grandparents drove over 6 hours to make it to our house (their house was only 12 miles from ours). I had never seen so much snow at once, even though I was born in Denver. What I remember most was how everyone on our block helped each other out during that time of need; with food, shoveling, heat, whatever was needed.
