Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Hill.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a psychology major at the CU Boulder, I chose to leave my hometown for a summer to work as a Congressional Intern in DC. It was there that I transitioned my professional vision from working with clients in need to working on their behalf in the policy arena. After graduation, I spent time working on issue and candidate campaigns at the local and national level. I then spent four years as a Chief Field Deputy for a Los Angeles City Councilwoman. After returning to Colorado in 2000, I joined Invest in Kids as our Deputy Director and focused on supporting high-quality, proven programs for low-income children and families and worked to implement and sustain those programs throughout the State of Colorado. In 2009, I was selected by Invest in Kids’ Board of Directors to be our second Executive Director. Our office is housed in Denver but we support our programs throughout Colorado. I have two daughters and our family lives in Broomfield.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Invest in Kids is on the cutting edge of our field. Focusing solely on delivering evidence-based, prevention programs is an exciting and difficult task. Invest in Kids has learned many important lessons through the obstacles and challenges that have faced us over the last 20 years. What we remain committed to is our work being informed by implementation science, an emerging field focused on the effective translation of research findings into policy and practices. We know that in order to successfully and sustainably support evidence-based programs in community-based settings, resources must be devoted to ensuring that programs and practices are successfully installed and implemented with fidelity in order to achieve expected outcomes. Building and sustaining implementation capacity results in a significant return on investment for communities.
Please tell us about Invest in Kids – what should we know?
Invest in Kids works with volunteers, community leaders, care providers, and donors to ensure our evidence-based, proven programs impact children and families across all 64 of Colorado’s counties. We implement two programs, Nurse-Family Partnership and The Incredible Years. We are most proud of our program outcomes positively impacting Colorado’s most vulnerable families. We are proud that the Nurse-Family Partnership produces improved pregnancy outcomes, better child health and development, and economic self-sufficiency for families. And that The Incredible Years is an early childhood emotional and social health program that works at school and at home to improve school performance, reduce child behavior problems, promote positive and consistent discipline, and support caregivers through a holistic approach involving children, parents, and teachers.
We leverage limited resources to improve outcomes for young children and their families. Invest in Kids bridges the gap between research and practice, collaborating with communities to provide services with proven effectiveness.
What makes us unique is our implementation approach:
First, we identify programs with proven track records or methodologies for success.
Second, we introduce these programs to communities to see where and how they can net the greatest impact.
Third, we implement the programs through partners in collaboration with community leaders.
Fourth, we ensure each program’s success through adherence to guidelines and measurement of results to ensure long-term sustainability.
Our commitment to research guiding our practice and our investment in quality evaluation is what enables us to engage in continuous quality improvement efforts to ensure that the return on investment for these programs is second to none.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Integrity. Invest in Kids acts at every turn with integrity. We make decisions based on what is best for the families that we exist to serve.
