Meet Jaiya Ellis of Steamboat Babysitting Company in Steamboat Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaiya Ellis.

Jaiya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Steamboat Babysitting started in 2011 by the previous owner, Jessica Olsen. She saw a need in the community for different childcare options and built the company from there. I came on as a full-time babysitter in the winter of 2012/2013. I loved working for the company and making my own schedule. Families vacation in Steamboat and stay for the entire week and need childcare for the little ones that are too small for ski school. Getting to know a family and spending the entire week with them didn’t feel like work. It was also fun to see the same families come back year after year and see the kids grow up.

My background is in Elementary Education and Outdoor Environmental Education, where I have always worked in a non-traditional classroom setting. I love exploring the natural world with children and seeing them discover something new for the very first time.

In Feb 2014 I became the Reservations Manager for SBC and I have built many lasting relationships with families and staff. The opportunity arrose in Oct 2018 to purchase the business and I felt like it was family and I couldn’t leave the family that I had worked so hard to build over the years. It was a natural transition for me to become the business owner and it just felt like the right move in my life at the time. Now with having kids of my own, a high energy 4-year-old girl and a six-month-old boy, I truly appreciate loving, caring, reliable childcare options.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is a constant struggle of relying on the busy tourist season to do most of our business but I have worked hard over the past four years to build relationships with locals and greatly appreciate their business any time of year. I understand the struggle of finding good childcare in a small community and we offer a locals rate to accommodate families that live and work in the community.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Personally, I define success as being well balanced in all aspects of life and truly happy where you are at in life. Every year will bring new beginnings and new challenges and it is how you decide to take those opportunities and move forward with them.

Professionally, I define having a successful business by operating in the black, having returning happy staff that is excited about working and repeat customers. The word of mouth is a powerful resources and our best assets are past and current employees and customers referring other customers. That speaks volumes to us as to the quality of childcare we provide and the attention to detail we give each and every customer.
