Meet Jake Holschuh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Holschuh.

Jake, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Ohio, living and working as a freelance photographer in Denver, CO. I’m pretty simple. I love my mountain time, coffee time, and being behind the camera. Getting to connect and learn from my subjects is what I find to be the most important aspect of my craft. It helps me learn how to photograph someone and understand this crazy world we live in. I came out to Colorado to attend school at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. I graduated with my BFA in Photography and I’ve been running my business ever since. I specialize in editorial and commercial photography and shoot everything from portraiture to products.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Freelancing always has its ups and down. I’ve noticed over the four years of operating my business that there are hot seasons and cold seasons. Some weeks, I have no shoots, others I have more than I can deal with. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Being my own boss and doing what I love makes everything okay at the end of the day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jake Holschuh Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Jake Holschuh Photography consists of me, Jake Holschuh! I’ve been freelancing for four years and work with magazines around the country as well as a handful of personal clients. I specialize in portraiture, lifestyle, and product photography. I do a lot of the cover and feature photography for Denver’s local magazine, Westword. I’ve worked all over the world from the Amazon jungle in Peru to the bustling streets of Bangkok. Traveling and meeting new people is my favorite part of the job. I’ve learned so much from my subjects, and having conversations with the people I photograph helps me convey who they are in their image. I’m looking forward to the future and continuing to grow my business and all of the amazing projects that await.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The plan is always to continue growing, and never become stagnant or satisfied. Over the past four years, I’ve done a lot of work around Denver, but I am looking forward to growing my connections throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world. I’ve been working on some personal projects recently, which is a very important thing to do as a photographer. I’m excited about this work and the goal is to continue to boost my portfolio and use it connect with agencies around the country.
