Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Rice.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Honeycomb & Co. is a market style flower shop and full-service wedding and event florist. We bring beautiful botanicals and unique, distinctive, and affordable décor to Northwest Denver, located in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Inspired by the art of hospitality, we believe little details play a big role in expressing care. We seek to offer character and beauty to Colorado homes and events through custom designed florals and playfully sophisticated décor.
I am a Colorado native and lifelong floral artist, and I founded Honeycomb & Co. after ten years of experience at flower shops around Denver and California. Owning my own flower shop was always my dream, and since I was 20 years old, I could hardly think of anything else. After working so hard in the industry for other wonderful companies, I just knew I wouldn’t be satisfied until I tried to do my own thing. I opened my shop in a 650 sq. ft. retail shop in Sunnyside, and just hoped that people would like my vision. Now, at 3 1/2 years later, we’ve expanded to double our size, we’re booking through our wedding seasons, and we’ve garnered a loyal following with amazing customers. All the time, I pinch myself, and I’m completely grateful! All the people have been so kind and helpful and loyal these past few years to get me here are truly the ones who get the credit for any success we have.
My vision was to create a welcoming shop environment where Sunnyside neighbors, and all Denverites, could stop in to find beauty. This vision extends to the gift and home decor collections we curate, the plants offered in shop, and the daily floral deliveries that we send all over the Denver Metro area. Honeycomb’s aesthetic revolves around warmth and playfulness; It’s distinctive yet approachable. My goal has always been to leave people feeling like they’ve discovered something original and lovely for their home; and most importantly, my goal is that our customers are met with kindness and care in every aspect of the interactions with us.
Has it been a smooth road?
Just like any small business owner, I’ve had moments when I’ve thought we weren’t going to make it to next month, and I’ve had moments where I just know everything is going to work out! Every single milestone for us has been celebrated because I know that not every business makes it, and I’m so thankful that we’re making it.
Initially, I didn’t envision being a wedding and event florist; I simply wanted to be a neighborhood flower shop. But, as a small business owner, I could never turn money away in the beginning. So I took on a few weddings our first year- 13 to be exact. Our growth was amazing between the first and second year, and we went from 13 weddings to 56 in our second year. I don’t think I even remember our second year! I didn’t know how to manage that growth and the employees it required, the planning, etc. We continued to grow into our 3rd year- and still are today- but I’ve learned how to be a better leader, and how to implement processes behind the scenes so that every employee knows how to handle most inquiries that come in.
I’ve also had two babies in the 3 1/2 years that we’ve been open, and so, mostly by necessity, I’ve learned how to say no to things. Sometimes I’ve said no to the wrong things, but for the most part, I’ve learned- and am learning- how to say no to things that don’t really align with my business, so that I have time and energy for my family, and for the important events and projects we take on. And I never want to get so busy that I don’t have time to stop and chat with a customer- that’s the most important thing to me.

We are a market style flower shop, so our flowers are sold by the stem. Customers can come in and pick out just a few blooms, or we can put together a custom bouquet for them. I love that everything we do is custom, and nothing is a reproduction. There is a little bit of art in every flower arrangement. We hand select 95% of our flowers, for both weddings and events, and shop flowers. We feel like that’s the best way to ensure quality, it allows us to stand behind our product, and it keeps our floral inventory rotating on almost a daily basis. It’s never boring here!
We also have a great rotating offering of gifts, cards, jewelry, home decor. In every aspect of the shop, I buy in small batches. We have the mindset that we’ll sell what we have and when it’s gone, it’s gone- get it while you can! It’s not so that everyone feels pressured to buy, but it’s just that I always want to be getting fresh, new products in. Our regular customers comment all the time about how different the shop looks, and I love that we can give them fresh perspective. We do have a few lines that I’ve carried from the beginning, but otherwise, it’s always fresh new things.
With our weddings and events, we’re completely custom in our designs and pricing. We like to meet with our clients, hear about their vision behind their wedding, what they’re excited about, they’re dreams, etc. And then we go and design a proposal that outlines their vision and how we can help them accomplish that. It’s so fun to get creative that way, and we love taking on all events- from a baby shower to a City Hall elopement to a grand wedding reception!
I hope, more than anything, that we’re known for our customer service and our kindness. At the end of the day, a customer could buy a candle from us or from someone down the street and love their purchase. It’s not our products that make us special, but rather It’s our care for people. If someone walks into my shop and needs a hug, needs someone to relate to them, needs a listening ear, then I hope we can be that for them. People are what matter, and I hope they buy our beautiful products of course, but I would always prefer that they know they are loved and valued after they leave my store.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Denver, and I’m a native to Colorado, so this is home. I’m not sure I could have opened a business elsewhere. Denver is so loyal to the specific neighborhoods around town, and I’ve been grateful for such a warm reception from our Sunnyside neighbors. Denver is growing like crazy, so it feels like there is great opportunity to reach a bigger population now than when I started!
