Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bridge.
Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating with a degree in painting from CSU in 2007, I was doing what most artist’s do… starve! I had no real solid plan after graduation and ended up taking a day job that was totally unfulfilling. My husband and I had also just gotten married… we were young, broke and wanting to live out these big dreams of being working artists but had no idea how to really ‘make it’. So, we went on an adventure! We found jobs teaching English in South Korea and after just a few months of preparation, we boarded a plan on a hope and prayer that it would lead to something awesome. We were very fortunate that it did and we found ourselves totally loving this foreign country and really immersing ourselves in the culture. While we were there, we picked up a little Nikon DSL and started really getting into photography. After our contract was up, we returned home and started trying to book clients for portraits. We were semi-successful there for a bit, but again, the bills were calling and we needed to pay them. My husband went back to school for teaching and I found a great job with the school district and stayed there for eight years. We started a family, bought our first house, adopted a dog… you know, the usual ‘adult’ stuff. But all the while, I maintained a photography side hustle as my creative outlet. When our second daughter was born, I knew I wanted to stay home (and let’s be honest, daycare was too expensive!!) It felt like the stars had aligned just right for me to finally pursue a life as an artist while having the flexibility to raise my two girls. In August of 2017, I registered my business, formed an LLC and went legit. I am now the proud owner and photographer behind Jennifer Bridge Photography! It has been a wild ride of emotional highs and lows but it has been so rewarding to see the growth that has come from starting my business. After nearly two years in (official) business, I’m serving clients I totally love while also being there for my family each day. It’s awesome. In my spare time, you can find me wrangling my two young daughters Lydia (5) & Emmersyn (2), hanging out with my husband Adam, playing outdoors and not doing the laundry.
Has it been a smooth road?
Bumpy! Oh so bumpy! Fortunately, I started out with lots of momentum and have been very lucky to have amazing clients that continue to refer me to their friends and family. That part is awesome! The other side of running a business has tossed me around pretty good. When I first started, I had NO idea how many hats I’d have to wear. In addition to being a photographer, I am also a CEO, secretary, editor, head of marketing, bookkeeper, social media planner, content creator, customer service representative, styling consultant and smile maker (plus a bunch of other random stuff that entrepreneurs get to do!). So, where does that leave time for fun and family? If you’re not careful, it doesn’t! I have found the work/life balance to be quite a challenge.
I think the biggest struggle along the way, has been learning how to do all of the things and then realizing I can’t do all of the things and then asking for help. This last year has definitely taught me that there are many wise and capable folks out there that I can learn from or call on as resources. I have intentionally cultivated relationships with other creative entrepreneurs and mom bosses to create a community that helps support me through all of the craziness. Making friends is hands down the most useful thing I’ve done to overcome the struggles that come with starting a business. Through these friendships, I have learned that the work/life balance is a struggle for everyone and that the best thing to do is let go of the expectation that you can do it all and ask for some help! Also, allow yourself to take things one day at a time and schedule fun stuff to look forward to! You gotta enjoy the flexibility you’ve earned as a small business owner!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jennifer Bridge Photography story. Tell us more about it.
I am a lifestyle portrait and wedding photographer rooted in sharing genuine, authentic moments. I specialize in creating images of my clients that tell their unique story using natural light in our beautiful Colorado surroundings. I have an innate ability to put others at ease in front of the camera while capturing true moments of connection that often go unnoticed. From babies to grumpy old men, I find it easy to connect with others and truly enjoy getting to know new people… so, it is quite common for my clients to become my friends over the years! am proud to show others the beauty around them as well as the beauty in themselves through the images we create together.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Photography is a fascinating industry. There are so many new trends that it’s nearly impossible to keep up. There is always new gear, new technology, new ways to edit or filters to try… it’s easy to get caught up in it. For me, I have found that trends are fun for a little while but that timeless and genuine images are going to win out year after year.
Rooting myself in my craft has been essential. As an artist, I am committed to staying true to myself before jumping on board with a new trend. I just ask myself, ‘Does this feel good?” “Do I love the work I am producing?” and most importantly, “Do my clients LOVE the images they are receiving?” This always helps me to remember the ‘why’ behind my business.
I will add, that I see a huge reverence for film photography right now and more and more photographers are learning or relearning to shoot in this classical form. Which is great, because I think it speaks to that idea that timeless, classic and genuine photography will always beat a trend.
