Meet Jessica Oldfield of June Poppies Designs in Fort Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Oldfield.

Jessica, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
June Poppies Designs began in the Summer of 2016. I was primarily a stay at home mom enjoying the time spent with my two young children. I had an overwhelming desire to tap into my creative side a bit more. It is easy to get completely absorbed into parenting and lose your sense of self and individuality. I knew that I would be a better mother, wife and friend if I poured into my own passions as well. I always loved to create and draw but I had never sold anything I created. It was a slow and scary step to put my work out there to the public. I did what I could with the time I had and made sure to get out and network as often as possible to meet people in the community. My Etsy shop @JunePoppiesDesigns was my first step to get my art out into the world. Now I have an eCommerce website in addition to Etsy and frequently participate in local Craft/Art Markets. I love to meet other humans and I am overwhelmed with gratuity with the support of my town, friends and family have provided.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When is starting your own business a smooth road? ha 🙂 There has certainly been struggles along the way. I have never been so grateful for Google Search. It is easy to get stuck in a link clicking black hole trying to learn all there is to learn about small businesses, taxes and retail. I think I am still learning so much. The other struggle is trying to give a good healthy balance of time to my part-time business and enjoy every moment I can with my family. I struggle with my priorities of home life and being able to dedicate the time I wish I had more of to the business I love so much. Honestly, I have incredible support from other like-minded, female business owners. The best decision I made was to join groups and meetings to discuss these struggles and celebrations of success. The talent of the women in this town astounds and inspires me daily!!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the June Poppies Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
June Poppies Designs is an art and illustration company. I typically work with watercolor, ink, colored pencil and some digital creations as well. I also sew from time to time but most of those goods can only be found at local markets. Most of my inspiration comes from nature, I love drawing flowers! I would say my most popular pieces are the Floral States and Flags I create. I get may custom requests to create specific States or flags made with local and native flowers and plants. Creating custom art for clients bring me so much joy! I love seeing the creativity come out in others and the challenge it brings me as well.

I am incredibly proud that I always stayed true to myself throughout this process. I take breaks in the summers and holidays so I can pour into my kids. I take the breaks I need to so I do not get burnt out and make time for fun. I truly love meeting people in the community that I may never have met if I didn’t put myself out there. I think what sets me apart is I have a lot on my plate and people at home that depend on me but I do not let that keep me from pursuing my own dreams and feeding my soul. Art is subjective and I know its not everyone’s cup of tea, I am okay with that.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I typically don’t allow myself to think of things as lucky or unlucky. I have worked hard for every bit of success. I see when things slow down because my effort has decreased. I see when sells and work flow in when I put my energy towards my business. The same goes for my home life. To look at anyone small business success and think they just got there by luck would be a shame. Majority of the time people are working their asses off behind the scenes. There are also just some uncontrollable scenarios that come up. Sometimes you just have to take a day to process and recover and then keep on hustling.
