Meet Jessica Taylor of The Ground

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Taylor.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before fitness, I was a professional dancer and massage therapist. I completed my comprehensive Pilates Mat and Apparatus Certifications in DUMBO, Brooklyn at The Lab and had roughly seven years of experience in Pilates, Pilates-based Personal Training, Cardio Strength classes, Urban Rebounder and instructing continuing ed workshops on rudimentary massage techniques.

At this time, I was gaining experience running all aspects of a small business as I founded a non-profit dance company, DAMAGEDANCE, and worked on marketing myself personally in my fitness career. I relocated to Denver four years ago and primarily worked independently as a Pilates instructor in addition to freelance choreography work, until just a few months ago when I decided to create a new home for my work.

The Ground is a boutique fitness and wellness studio offering private and group instruction in Pilates, Yoga, Cardio/Strength classes, specialty wellness workshops, free natural product education and also houses The Lab Pilates Certification Programs (the only in the Denver area).

I absolutely love having a mix of all of the things I love under one roof, helping my clients, mentoring my certification students, working daily on my own wellness and laughing at myself along the way! Right now, I live in Denver with my fiance, Josh, and our dog Dodger.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
HA! What does it mean for things to go smoothly? I could list a huge amount of challenges along the way, but the main that I would mention at this point in my career is marketing to a brand new hood and starting from the ground up (no pun intended) over and over again.

New York audience and clientele are very different from Colorado in terms of what will pull someone in and grab their attention. I have learned a LOT about the power of consistency, always trying different angles and not giving up! When you have a strong product, you MUST believe in it, or others won’t.

My other challenge is not only maintaining life/work balance but maintaining the balance between my creative and hands-on training and helping others with the administrative side of running a business. My motto is ONE THING AT A TIME.

There will always be more to do, and the overwhelm can pile on, but when one task is in front of me without me thinking about the next I don’t rush and am more focused to complete it the best way I can…and when I need a break to clear my head I can walk three feet to work out!

Please tell us about The Ground.
The Ground is a boutique fitness and wellness studio in Southwest Denver offering Pilates, Yoga, Cardio/Strength classes, specialty workshops, free natural product education, and Pilates Certification programs. I am primarily focused on Pilates and Pilates-based personal training as well as training soon-to-be Pilates instructors.

I am known for providing quality over quantity. My classes and sessions are about giving us longevity, not throwing our stuff around. We strive to do five perfect reps rather than 25 mindless ones. This carries over into my certification offerings. I try to create an environment of acceptance of all fitness goals and personalities where we can take our work seriously, but ourselves, not so much. So laughter is pretty crucial… it’s crucial to our life and to our health, don’t you think?

When you come to The Ground, you know that you are not only getting quality fitness knowledge to apply to your daily lives, but you also have an environment that can be a home away from home. It is an intimate space, providing small classes with personal attention where you can be at ease knowing that your safe and have a crew to come back to who really knows what they are doing to help you. I have seen clients through multiple surgeries, health scares, life transformations, you name it… and they have seen me through my life happenings as well. It’s a beautiful two-way street.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
OOOOOhhhh that’s a toughie. If I had to pick one, it would be being a foster sister. My family had at least one child fostered pretty consistently through all of my elementary and middle school-aged life! It was such a blast and brought so much joy while also teaching me lessons about what I had and what I saw in front of me.
