Today we’d like to introduce you to Joan Cabarrus.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a professional sculptor specializing in recreating people’s pets. I started this journey in February 2018 when my husband gave me a shoebox full of sculpting supplies. In anything that I do whether it is a career or a hobby, I always wanted to help people in need and participate in activities that are meaningful. Being a registered nurse, I am able to apply compassion to grieving customers as well.
Creating art is one of my natural abilities and to help people with this skill, I decided to focus on immortalizing people’s pets to help people heal from pet losses.
Creating art is not my destination but to reach to the heart of the people. I have a goal that one day, I will be able to afford a bigger art studio sculpting space for our local community. This space will be focusing on sculpture art and animals art as they aren’t as common here. Also, after the previous few months of being active in promoting my work, I immediately saw that this type of art responds to a lot of parents. These parents or their children are so excited and eager to learn sculpting especially with pets. People who are suffering from emotional and mental illnesses also have reached out to me to give them guidance or tips on how to sculpt to help them. Art is a huge therapy for anybody and these are the reasons why I love what I do.
I have many goals with this journey and no matter what path I take to succeed, my purpose is to always help others whether it be the inspiration, entertainment, or education.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is my very first business. I had to learn the social media, marketing, the networking, stepping out of my comfort zone, the sales tax, and be active to the art community and animal community. It is indeed a very fun and rewarding hard work.
JFCRN Custom Pet Sculptures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
JFCRN Custom Pet Sculptures brand was created to help people heal from pet losses. For now, I am the only working artist/sculptor recreating people’s pets. In time, hoping the business becomes very successful, I will be able to teach and hire more sculptors to work with me.
I specialize in creating pet sculptures using a polymer clay medium. My biggest pride when it comes to my company is that it was built to help people heal from pet losses, teach younger generation with creativity, and having my presence to whoever I meet would be a source of a good leader and inspiration.
What sets me apart from other artists/sculptors/pet sculptors is that create very one-of-a-kind and personalized pet sculptures for the customers.
First, I asked the customers about the general information about the pet (name, gender, breed, size).
Second, I ask the customer about any special memorable items that the customer want me to incorporate into the piece. For example, a dog that never played dog toys but loved to steal bagels. There are not any pictures shows that the dog stealing a bagel but with the intuitive and imaginative process, I am doing my best to recreate this scenario in a form of sculpture.
Another biggest feature that sets me apart from others is that I incorporate disguised urns in or on the sculptures itself. These urns are individually engineered according to the size, the style, and complexity of how it will function. For example, a reservoir for the dog’s ashes is placed inside the dog sculpture’s body. The lips of the urn could be made hidden in the dog’s mouth, or any part of the body.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is to be able to help people with my purpose. In reality, success to me is also having to create unlimited artwork for people. The kind of work that people actually seek.
