Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Voss.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Johanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m in my 9th year of being an entrepreneur. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, it’s had a very non-linear path. I started as a Nutrition Coach for endurance runners and cyclists in 2011. I was living in Barcelona at the time after a year traveling the world and was ready to get out, use my brain and earn money. Through this work, I met more and more coaches and online business owners. They saw how I ran my business, launched and sold successful online courses and approached me for help doing the same for them. That once off opportunities became 3-month projects and longer. That transitioned me from working strictly as a Nutrition Coach to doing business consulting specific to operations, project management, and strategy sessions.
During one particular strategy session for a new client who is a social media influencer, we were reviewing her business and she had a couple of brand partnership opportunities come in. She asked me to respond and act as her manager. I did, got her 3x the amount she would have asked for and she was floored.
Before I left FL, she asked me to be her manager. I didn’t 100% know what that entailed but I have a very strong “I’ll figure it out” approach so I said yes. It seemed fun, challenging and I always appreciate taking advantage of new opportunities. That was 2+ years ago.
In December of 2018, I wrapped up all my ongoing business consulting retainer clients (who I’d been working with for a couple of years) and went 100% in on my boutique talent agency. I represent female social media influencers and keynote speakers. I pitch them, I negotiate for them, help them build their brand and support them; however, I can. It’s my dream job I didn’t even know I wanted.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Wondering how I was going to make it all work aka earn consistent income, have more stability, grow my business, move out of survival mode, start paying myself, start saving again, etc.
I never doubted that I would make it all work but I was just never clear on the when and how that would happen.
The challenges for the first 0-3 years+ are very much about survival and keeping the business lights on. My challenges now that my business is stable, growing and expanding are more about all the creative and innovative things I want to do. That’s what keeps me up at night and I wouldn’t change it for the world! It takes time and every stage has its challenges.
Please tell us about Johanna B. Voss Agency.
I own a boutique talent agency, managing Female Influencers and Keynote Speakers. I’m a manager/agent. I negotiate, I pitch, I close deals, I make connections, I get things done, I build personal brands.
I’m known for representing women, majority of whom are women of color. I’m known for loving to talk about money, rates, deliverables and signing contracts. All my clients love that I’m not afraid to call anyone and everyone and that I answer every single call I receive.
I’m proud of showing up with integrity daily, for putting a voice to what I believe in (asking for the right compensation and value for my clients), for not backing down or getting discouraged from a no and most importantly for making strong, solid, fun connections. I love being the woman behind the woman.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is time spent playing with my cousins – either in Boston at my Nana’s house or in London, where my mom is from.
