Today we’d like to introduce you to John Andrewq Kolczynski.
John, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child living in an orphanage in the Philippines, there were so many limitations on what I was allowed to do. I loved music, I loved fashion and I loved art. I was made fun of; I was bullied or being ambitious. I was told I can’t do the things because I was an orphan. I didn’t really care for what people said for I was just a child trying to understand what was going on. When I was 12 years old I was adopted and came here to the US. Not knowing that my past would affect me in my teenage years.
I was diagnosed with PTSD, Depression and Anxiety. I thought “I would never be good enough, no one will ever love me, I wished that I should have never been alive.” When I turned 18, I became independent. I’ve never felt such freedom. I auditioned for a symphony as a violist and I was accepted. I started designing my own clothing and have become known in Denver. Currently, I am going to therapy to keep myself balanced. Many have supported me. Family; friends, therapist, and Co-workers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. I am learning that there’s always something new that I have to learn. As much as I would like to be perfect in every task I do, unfortunately that is not possible, Some struggles along the way are there’s always going to be people telling you what you like to hear to benefit them. There’s always going to be models that won’t show up. Sometimes, I get so tired and burnt out that I start thinking negatively about myself.
Please tell us about your business.
My company is called Anton LaRosa. I chose that name because for some reason people call me Anthony. That’s where Anton came from, LaRosa came from my love for roses. I am a self-taught Fashion Designer, I sketch my designs and sew it myself. I am most proud at how much my company is growing with the help of my partner Daustin Harvey (who also owns a production company called LaRosa Productions)
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t stick with only one thing. I love to learn new things. I love to explore. I love to challenge, but most of all my originality.
