Meet Julia Tobey of The Cottonwood Club in RiNo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Tobey.

Julia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from UNC in Greeley, I lived all over the world for fifteen years before returning home to Colorado. Paris, New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles all have these incredible clubs that transport guests to another world, another era. I found them so inspiring and I wanted something like that in my hometown of Denver.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha! I definitely underestimated how much work it takes to open a club.

We hired a bar staff and venue that seriously dropped the ball at our Halloween Spookeasy and compromised our reputation and budding brand. Helping our guests understand how much we care and trying to make it up to them has been hard. It’s hard to trust when another professional company doesn’t deliver what they promise.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Cottonwood Club story. Tell us more about the business.
New Year’s Eve 2019 – everyone is looking for a Roaring Twenties party but no one wants the cheesy version of a Gatsby soirée. We are so proud of the incredibly unique qualities The Cottonwood Club has to offer that set us apart from other offerings in Denver.

For starters, we have super high-quality, non-stop entertainment including eight circus acts from Circus Foundry, DJ Fusion Band Black Iris Collective, 1920s swing band Deja Swing, acclaimed tap-dancing troupe The Honey Taps, national headlining comic Heath Hyche, drag queens Jessica L’Whor and Evelyn Evermoore; and acclaimed burlesque performer Bang Bang Von Loola will perform 1920s inspired featured performances.

There will also be decadent carnival carts with gourmet sweet and savory treats, eight bars, birdcages with beautiful dancers, a champagne glass filled dress donned by drag queens, a confetti celebration at midnight, a “best-dressed” contest, luxury prize drawing, gorgeous Gatsby decor, numerous photo opportunities and booths and more.

We want our club to feel authentic and fantastical at the same time. We love immersing our guests into another world by gathering an amazing group of unique performers from right here in Colorado.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade
Of course, Gatsby will be a very popular trend throughout 2020 and we are excited to be earning contracts with corporations to handle their Roaring Twenties events from start to finish. In Colorado and nationally. Even after 2020, I think people will still seek a speakeasy environment and a fun excuse to dress up and go out.

We love partnering with Angela Johnston of Sapphire Celebrations. She has a creative eye and loving attention to detail. Very creative and ahead of the trends. She takes on the event planning so we can focus on the entertainment and production.
