Meet Justin Johnson of Dream Is Grind Productions in Cherry Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Johnson.

Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for music that started back when I was younger, I started making beats when I was in college at Temple University and continued to create different melodies still until this day. For a period of time I lived in LA playing football, where I met an owner of an entertainment management company Vanzil Burke, who inspired me to take the next step. Instead of just creating, I wanted to help manage artists which transitioned me to kick off my LLC DreamisGrind back in 2014. When I started, I was managing one artist and was my own team of marketing – both digital and by word of mouth in various venues that housed music throughout Denver, production, and management. Over time, it grew into a team of artists as well as a production team.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, anything that is worth doing well takes time and you learn by trial and error. This industry isn’t a typical “career” industry, you see people’s true colors when you are trying to do good business. One of the huge struggles is to brand yourself in a very competitive market in a city that is still hasn’t taken off for its music nationwide. In this industry, ego tends to get in the way for collaboration which can make it difficult to work well with people. Music is subjective, you might think you have great music but it may not be great for someone else’s ear.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dream Is Grind Productions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The initial concept was to focus on artist management with one specific artist and grow the name. Over time, the company has become home to a top-notch, musically diverse set of individuals committed to reaching the heights of their creative endeavors. D.I.G. has flourished not only by targeting artists to manage but has developed its range of services by encompassing Artist Development, Concert Production, Event Planning, Execution, Networking, Digital Services, and Marketing Solutions. With a foundation built on synergy, DreamisGrind focuses on bringing an idea to light by taking input from the entire team and conceptualizing ideas with an end goal in sight.

I am most proud of establishing a name for my company, but more so, working with many individuals such as Keith Komedy, Lopez, Taurean, Chy Reco, Jay Triiiple, DJ Thred, Zach Maxwell, Annabelle, KDJ Above, KGBdrums and countless others who contributed to bringing people together through music; specifically through our Kush Groove series we established back in 2018. Kush Groove was a platform we created to showcase Colorado talent and to celebrate diversity and culture. We wanted to demonstrate that we believe in Denver and to make it a culture of collaboration.

What sets us apart from others is our ability to work with different vertices and develop different business relationships.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am originally from here so I’ve been able to witness, first hand, the economic boom and how it changed Denver for the better. I lived in a few different cities around the nation, and Denver is still one of the most beautiful places. I love my Denver Mexican food, there is nothing like it! Of course, I love the Denver Broncos and Denver Nuggets and being able to go to the mountains for a quick getaway. Lastly, I really like the creativity from several music artists out here, I ultimately believe there is several Denver artists that should be heard on a national level.

Given the growth, there have been some negative things that I dislike such as traffic and how the housing market skyrocketed not making it an easily affordable place for everyone. I think that has increased the homeless population which is very disheartening. There’s been a lot of gentrification in historic neighborhoods such as Five Points ultimately impacting that authentic culture.
