Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaelin Tillery.
Kaelin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My husband Richard and I built Counter Couture out of a very basic desire to live a simple, fulfilling and creative life. After the coffee company I worked for went out of business in 2009, I was faced with what to do next. While pondering, Richard happened to mention he knew how to screenprint. I always wanted to learn and we both have an art background, so we did the logical thing…
We bought a used press with all our savings and started a business. Our first job paid off the press! Back then, we were a print-for-hire shop (printing other people’s stuff), but in 2011 we transitioned into what is now Counter Couture. From humble beginnings working in our kitchen and then our garage, we are now pushing the seams of our warehouse in Denver.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every business has it’s ups and downs. Overall I feel very fortunate. I have taken on some custom work in the past that in hindsight, was beyond the companies abilities at the time, but doing it helped me learn. I learned my limitations, new processes, how to be more efficient.
Counter Couture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Counter Couture, we manufacture screen-printed home goods + apparel. We start by hand illustrating our designs. We then hand screen print using eco-friendly ink on the highest quality materials. I love that I am able to create and produce items in Denver and employ local people. The overall esthetic of clean, simple illustrations that are slightly whimsical paired the quality of the products sets us apart. Our flour sack tea towels are made in the USA and are super absorbent.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is every day! Every day my husband and I get to take our dogs to work at a business we created and that business is almost ten years old. It’s crazy to me and also so humbling.
