Meet Kali Handford of Berriegood Co. in S Pearl Street Neighborhood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Handford.

Kali, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came from the startup world and always wanted to start up something of my own. My Dad has been eating acai bowls since way before it was “cool”, and I knew that acai bowls would be a hit in Denver. Berriegood Co. was born in October 2015 as Denver’s first acai superfruit cafe. We are locally founded and woman-owned. We’re so happy to bring some good to our neighborhood with health eats that taste like treats!

Has it been a smooth road?
I have so much respect for any small business and try to support others whenever I can. Being an entrepreneur is one of the most rewarding (and challenging) adventures. The week we were supposed to open I was diagnosed with a serious illness. I had to find a way to be there for my baby (aka business), and take care of my health, while stepping out of the store for the first critical four months. Building the best team and enabling them is what saved the business. It taught me to operate without being at the center of everything (even though I wanted to) and forced me to build something more sustainable.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Berriegood Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Berriegood Co. specializes in acai superfruit bowls, smoothies, and other goodness. We hand blend everything to order, so it’s easy for us to modify for dietary needs. Vegetarian, Whole30, vegan, Paleo, gluten-free, low sugar, nearly anything we can modify for. We pride ourselves on not adding junky fillers – sorbet, ice, juice, processed sugars. What I’m most proud of in our company is the ethos and culture of our team, and how this goodness spreads to our customers. We have the kindest team and customers. We’re dealing in fruit…what is there to be upset about?!?

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how much Denver is evolving. So much good stuff to eat, do, drink, visit, see, learn. Denver-ites are introducing and bringing new ideas to an already great place. You can do something new nearly every day – even as simple as trying a new food, like acai.

What I like least about our city? Bomb cyclones.

  • Bowls start at $9.25
  • Smoothies start at $6.50
