Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara and Jeff Smith.
Colorado Craft Beef was founded to extend the legacy of our family cattle ranch that was homesteaded at this location in the early 1900s. The ranch has been in continuous operations since 1913. Being born the 5th generation on the family ranch, Kara has an inborn love and passion for the cattle industry, the ranching lifestyle and of course Colorado beef. Therefore, after moving back to the ranch with her husband, Jeff, the idea of Colorado Craft Beef formed as a way to connect our historic western heritage and values with a changing consumer. This mission is accomplished through providing high quality, Colorado beef product with a transparent and authentic story.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since the inception of CCB in 2017, we’ve certainly had our share of challenges with regard to sales generation and overall coordination that surrounds the shipping of extremely perishable products. However, in contrast to some of the challenges faced by agriculture over the ages we’re very blessed to live in a time in society that information is so readily shared and premium products are valued by the general public.
As we’ve built the business and overall volume of sales, we are always working on new ways to use all the beef product throughout the value chain. We’ve worked to expose customers to unfamiliar cuts of meat and paired that with recipes and general information sharing to better engage with the public.
Our largest challenge to date has been the negative marketing trend in the food space. A large number of companies have tried to leverage label claims, and general misinformation to secure customers. In general, this causes confusion in the public and leads to a need for transparency that everyone offers but few will in fact deliver.
We’ve really enjoyed the ability to engage with the public and spread the word about where food really comes from.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Colorado Craft Beef – what should we know?
At the heart of Colorado Craft Beef, we are a beef company specializing in bringing beef to a consumer’s table with full transparency from the beginning of production to the end. We work closely with all of our partners throughout the beef chain to truly craft a beef experience from the ranch to a customers table.
We are very proud of our opportunity to continue to help grow the family ranching legacy. We are known for establishing a genuine connection with our customers across the country. Our customers have come to know us as the producer of top of the line beef that’s hard to beat, with a level of personal customer service that everyone can appreciate.
What sets us apart from many other beef suppliers is our knowledge and connection to the entire beef production process and our desire to engage with customers that we place first in every facet of our business.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity! Staying authentic to our mission, our heritage and always keeping the end consumer in mind; not just sell beef, but to be a part of that person or family’s lifestyle that keeps them connected to where food comes from.
