Today we’d like to introduce you to Karal Stutz.
Karal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started cutting my own hair at 12 years old. By that age, I already had my own ideas of how things should be done. I did all my friends’ hair for the proms in high school and practiced regularly on my twin sister. So naturally, I went to cosmetology school right after high school back in upstate NY where I grew up. I worked in various salons for ten years there. I trained with some amazing hairstylists, took some specialty courses (like color correction and hair extension certification, etc.) and had some of the most wonderful clients.
In my spare time, I used to sing in a band with my father and stepmother, my brother would step in on drums occasionally too. To practice and build up my confidence on stage I would go to a karaoke bar on the nights we didn’t perform. And this is where I met the man I now call my husband, who just happened to be there because he lived close by. Living there in Syracuse on a short term job contract, six short months later he whisked me away to Colorado and I never looked back!
I worked in a busy salon in Boulder for just under two years building a fabulous clientele. When I heard about the Sola Salons concept, I knew it was for me and I had to give it a go on my own. Here I am now, 9.5 years later, and it was honestly the scariest but most rewarding leap I’ve ever taken. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
Has it been a smooth road?
The prettiest view often comes at the end of the bumpiest road. However, one mustn’t get stuck there, only to go blind of the beauty. My road to small business ownership was not without its obstacles, but I found the challenge was to fight complacency. It’s easy to fall into a happy little pocket and keep doing the same things all the time until your groove becomes…ugh boring and then….😔 sloppy. So I’m Always on the lookout for that next new hot service that everyone just has to have. That’s not to say that I end up offering every new technique I learned in the salon. I may not even learn every technique I look into! But you gotta keep dropping nickels in the jukebox! Keep finding what excites you and ignites the same passion you had in the beginning.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sugar Hair Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Sugar Hair Studio is a place where modern meets warm and chic meets cozy. I do color services from basic to balayage, hair extensions, hair cuts and styling for both men and women alike. I specialize in eyelash extensions and microblading. But I’m known for my attention to detail in all aspects of my work. It’s the fine details that are the difference between a job well done and a seamless one. What sets me apart from others are the extra details. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a little extra almost every day; it’s a lifestyle! But I love to share all my beauty secrets with my guests, so it doesn’t matter what we’re talking about…if I have a tip, I’m sharing it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boulder has changed so much in the 12 years I’ve been around but the one thing I can say for sure is that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. I would say as far as Boulder goes, I’d love to see a few more venues to get fancy, where we could throw a little more glitter around! I’m sure someone out there can figure out how to make it biodegradable!!
