Meet Kelly Grady of Tender Loving Carats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Grady.

Kelly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began as a Head Start teacher & worked in jewelry stores after college, at night, and on weekends to help my husband get through chiropractic school. Then I became a morning kindergarten teacher & soon after started my business with $500 by selling sterling silver jewelry to teachers in the lounge at lunch. Other teachers heard about me, so I started selling at their schools, too.

After a couple years, I quit teaching to do volunteer work and sell jewelry full-time. We did not plan on having children, so we mentored two boys who were 11 and 14 years old. Each week we helped them with their homework, took them out to eat or to the movies, and hung out. Their foster mom had fully adopted them, but moved away and abandoned them a year later. They moved in with us, we adopted them, and became an instant family. Because I was self-employed, I was able to work from home and help raise them.

Within a year, even though I have always been referral-only business with no advertising, my business continued to grow through charitable giving and word-of-mouth. I have expanded my business from only selling sterling to specializing in custom pieces for engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions. When clients send their friends, family, and coworkers to me, I am so honored. I’ve done custom work for College and NFL teams, fire and police departments, and also for TV producers, weather & newscasters. I can help anyone in any price range, and I love to make clients feel comfortable by staying in their budget with no pressure selling.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The jewelry business has drastically changed through the years. When I started, only jewelry stores sold sterling silver. Now many of the department stores do as well. The biggest change was when diamonds started being sold on the Internet. People can now go online to buy, even though they don’t know what they’re getting, who the company is, or if they will be taken care of after the sale. They lose the personal touch. I love to save my clients money and I take care of them throughout the process.

Tender Loving Carats – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a worldwide Diamond and Jewelry Broker, I sell high-end jewelry at 20 to 50% below retail. Satisfied customers refer friends and family to me, and I love helping clients with important milestones, with no pressure selling, while sticking to their budget. Facebook has helped me keep in contact with special people from my past. I’ve sold engagement rings to three of my former kindergarten students, and jewelry to many of my high school classmates, even one who bullied me when I was in school. She is very nice now and apologized for it.

What sets me apart from others is the fact that I do not have a storefront. This helps my business because I have a lower overhead so I can deliver better prices. I’m most proud that I started with nothing, have never done any advertising, and have now been in business for 20 years.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The best moments of my career are when I have satisfied customers who are excited about their experience, and they share with me pictures of their special times—when they propose or give their jewelry to the people they love. I enjoy spreading positivity & love to friends, clients, and other business owners all over the world through social media, phone, email, or meeting with them in person.
