Meet Kendra & Zach Custer of Anthology Fine Art in Englewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra & Zach Custer. Them and their team share their story with us below.

Please kick things off for us with some background the story of the brand.
Your Life on Your Walls.

At Anthology Fine Art, we believe the walls of every home or business tell a story, your unique story.  For Zach and Kendra Custer it begins with a shadow box of three pairs of shoes:  the infant novelty, leather teether booties and the trashed soft soles their son learned to walk in.  A photo of Kendra at an air show when she was five. The wall dedicated to “the working man”: Zach’s father at the marble quarry and Kendra’s father welding.  Original art of friends and strangers they admire. Everything that hangs on the walls of their home reflects their journey, ignites a memory or shows their love of original art.  The passion they feel for collecting, preserving and displaying their own family’s history makes it a pleasure to do the same for others through custom framing and portrait photography.

Zach and Kendra have been picture framing for a combined 36 years in the Denver area. Their large gallery features local, emerging artists.  Whether you’re looking for affordable custom framing with superior customer service, a family portrait or a new piece of art, Anthology Fine Art is your one-stop shop.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business from scratch is a daunting task. As any small business owner will tell you, there are some really difficult days, sometimes weeks, in those beginning years. Adding to the dynamic of working with your spouse is another layer of challenges. You can let those challenges tear you apart or bring you together. We’ve approached the hurdles as “us against the world” and appreciating the fact that no other business partner is going to have the dedication to us and our family that we have for each other.

We’ve joked that at some point in the beginning years we each wanted to quit, but luckily it wasn’t on the same day. Without Zach’s dedication to perfection in the quality of work we produce, we’d have failed. Without Kendra’s willingness to learn things like paying sales tax, we’d have failed. Thankfully, customer service has always been a strong focus and second nature for both of us and we truly enjoy seeing our clients through a project from start to finish and making people happy.

The struggle of being dedicated enough to show up every day, for our clients, for each other and at the end of the day, for our child, is a lot of work. Looking back at the last nine years and toward the future, it’s been worth it.

Please tell us more about Anthology Fine Art. What else should we know?
We specialize in conservation and archival grade custom picture framing, portrait photography and art sales. We place a huge importance on customer service and a quality finished product. We serve many galleries and collectors on the front range in Colorado as well as clients having something custom framed for the very first time. It is our goal to create a strong connection between our clients and the important things they hang on their walls. Whether it is original art, photographs, or a historic shadow box we want to help our clients tell their story and make it last a lifetime. We offer a superior customer experience and truly care about our client’s art and framing. We constantly look forward to creating new client relationships while continuing to grow those that we already have. We are proud to be a locally owned small business serving our community.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hindsight is always 20/20 and it’s easy to see now that we made mistakes along the way. We choose to see those mistakes and the things we learned as the guide that brought us to a place we’re really excited about now. Starting a business is a crazy rollercoaster of a ride, and we would encourage anyone starting out to look at it as an adventure rather than a scary endeavor. You may have a chance to start over in another business applying what you’ve learned, but staying focused and committed to the one that you’re currently running has always served us well.
