Meet Kendrick Julian of Little Love Organics in Greenwood Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendrick Julian.

Kendrick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When my then two-month-old son was diagnosed with eczema, I was frustrated by the options available to us. Eczema is a skin condition that results in red, inflamed and very itchy skin that can often get infected. Our pediatrician offered a steroid cream – which felt like a “sure thing” but also felt rather much for an infant. What I was seeing on the store shelf wasn’t much better – products with ingredients like propylene glycol and petrolatum, which are airplane de-icing fluid and refined petroleum.

After learning that the skin absorbs 60+% of what you put on it, I felt a bit apprehensive about using products with such harsh, untested ingredients. Meanwhile, my best friend and business school classmate (and future business partner) was going through the same thing. Only her son had a tree-nut allergy which meant pretty much nothing on the market would work for his super sensitive skin. I give full credit to Alexandra who convinced me that we could solve this problem by creating our own skincare line.

We worked with an incredible skincare product formulator who specializes in working with natural, plant-based ingredients to come up with our first product, the Sensitive Skin Soother. It’s designed and specifically formulated for addressing the symptoms of eczema in newborn babies, which means it’s safe for all ages. We launched our business in early 2019 with the Sensitive Skin Soother and have since worked with the same formulator to create an Everyday Soother, Diaper Balm and bath treatments. All Little Love Organics products are crafted with natural organic ingredients that have been obsessively researched. Every ingredient has been chosen for a specific purpose, either for its ability to calm, heal, and protect.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh good heavens! The two pieces of advice I’ll offer to is first and foremost to pick a business partner who you can depend on no matter what happens. My business partner, Alexandra Mims, is the absolute best person for me to have as co-pilot for this journey. The other advice that countless others have shared before me is to pursue a business that solves a problem you care about. We both care deeply about educating others about harmful ingredients that parents are inadvertently introducing into their children’s bloodstream through skincare, food, toys, etc. When you care about your mission and have the right partner, you can stay the course no matter how bumpy the ride.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Little Love Organics – what should we know?
Little Love Organics specializes in skin care products for children with sensitive skin. Our products are known for being as “clean” as possible. In fact, most of our ingredients are actually food grade. We want consumers to be able to look at our ingredient list and actually understand what is in their product.

Consumer education is also an important component for us. Our goal is to educate people about skincare and similarly health-related topics they might not be aware of. For instance, many people don’t know that many nations have banned over 1,400 chemicals from cosmetic products, but the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has only banned 9.

In terms of what we’re most proud of, besides our products, I think Alexandra and I would both say that we are proud to build a culture that is for working moms. We are both working moms – in fact, our children are two months apart. We know the motherhood struggle and have purposely worked almost exclusively with other working moms on our business. On most conference calls, someone must briefly step away to tend to a tearful child.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have incredible customers who have helped us to spread our message. We’ve grown organically through word-of-mouth. As parents ourselves, we know first-hand how frustrating it is to find the right product to actually soothe eczema or sensitive skin on a young baby. We have been blown away by the encouragement and support we’ve received from other parents who love what we’ve created.

We also both have supportive spouses who cheer, challenge, motivate and believe in us. However, I have to credit my son and Alexandra’s son for being the true inspiration behind our business. They’re our original “little loves”.
