Meet Kimberly Kolesar of P.S. The Pilates Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Kolesar.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was Born in Denver, raised in Northern California, and came back to Denver for college, where I received my BS in Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder. After my four years at CU, I stuck around and eventually knew I never wanted to leave.  Denver is such a liveable city. People are friendly, active, cultured –the lifestyle is very appealing to me.

The Pilates Studio is something I have dreamt about since I was young, but my original dream (being a former competitive dancer) was for my studio to be a dance studio. My mom owned her own dance studio in the San Francisco Bay Area, this is where I danced and taught dance to kids and teens. So, movement of the body was passed down in my bloodline I suppose.

As I got older, my vision changed. During my dance days, I suffered many injuries & growing pains from being so active at such a young age and really started to feel the harsh effects on my body. I still love dance & always will, but I do realize how demanding it is on the body. Anyone who says dance is not a sport has never tried to balance and spin around on pointe shoes! P.S. is in a way a journey back “home” for me. My life has always been lived in a studio & always will. It’s where I feel most alive & at peace.

Pilates came into my life when I was working in Radio Marketing, sitting at a desk 9-5 and was running for exercise each evening after work. I actually really enjoyed running, until one day my knees started to really hurt. I tried to push through the pain and soon knew something was wrong. I went to lots of doctors, none of which could provide me any real diagnosis. A friend recommended Pilates. I was desperate to find something that I loved & felt good on my body.

I did my first class at the downtown YMCA, & never looked back! My knee pain eventually diminished, and I knew from there I had to make this miracle a part of my life. I made it my mission to learn all about Pilates- what it is, how it started, why it works… the list goes on. I soon enrolled in my teacher certification program, began teaching at studios in and around Denver, and many years later The Pilates Studio was born!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting started: I looked for quite a long time to find an amazing location. The market for retail locations was competitive, expensive and finding a space that could fit all my machines was tricky. One day, feeling very discouraged, I skipped my normal extensive searching habits and went back to basics and looked on Craigslist. Four days later, my lease was signed.

After so much time looking, it was over in a blink of an eye. I could not have found a better location. I wave to my neighbors walking their dogs and playing with their kids. I see a student every time I walk to get coffee or groceries–it’s a lively, friendly & welcoming community. I hope to cultivate this at The Pilates Studio (it’s part of my mission statement), and I plan to stay for the long haul!

Ongoing Challenges– has been the day to day trials of running your own business… that the work never really ends. I have dreams about Pilates & wake up to Pilates. Finding a balance between personal life and work is always a struggle; after five yrs in, I’m better at knowing when to put it down for the day. But, in the end, it always comes back to you… sometimes it just does not work to say, “But, today is my day off!”

P.S. The Pilates Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Making Pilates financially affordable to all. It is traditionally a very pricey workout and discourages many from experiencing how wonderful and essential the method is for one’s body. We have been able to offer competitive price points, and it’s my mission to continue this philosophy forever. I am very passionate about this detail at The Pilates Studio. I want Pilates to be something people can put into their budget during all phases of life.

We also are known for our wonderful, detailed and varied classes that include comprehensively certified Pilates instructors who know the body and can help any “body” be safe and feel challenged in any session. We offer a wide range of sessions including a very popular Buff Bones Pilates program that is geared towards those managing the prevention of and working with Osteoporosis.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
That I wake up every day and love what I’m going to do for work each day.
