Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Norfleet.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was younger, I always wanted to be a mom. I felt like that was why I was put on this earth. I had always loved styling hair for my friends and thought I would love doing hair for a living. What really enticed me was the flexibility doing hair has. I graduated from cosmetology school at the top of my class in 2007 and started working in a salon with an intense training program. I assisted the owner with her clients while taking my own and also working through the training program. I feel that was one of the best decisions I could have made just out of school. I moved back to Colorado and worked for a salon for a year before heading out on my own journey. I have been working to grow a strong business ever since. It has taken many years and some ups and downs but now that I am married with three small kids, I can absolutely have that flexibility I was looking for. I love getting to spend an hour or two with each soul who sits in my chair and chat about life. My goal is that each person leaves with that radiant feeling you get when your outer beauty is reflecting your inner beauty. What better career is there?
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Working for other salons, in the beginning, meant that I didn’t have flexibility with my schedule like I had always wanted. Some salon environments can be very toxic and I found myself in one when I moved back to Colorado before I went out on my own. When I started to build my own clientele, that was hard as well. I didn’t have the tools to really market myself and build fast, so I had to work other jobs, sometimes four at a time, to make my dream a reality. I struggled with charging my worth for many years as well. I’m so glad I’ve come through all of that and am now in a place where I’m charging my worth, I’m booked solid for weeks out and I am able to create the experience I want with having my own studio.
Illuminate Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I use to think I had to do all types of hair. Now I realize the hair that I love doing the most is natural, lived in, sometimes subtle but sometimes has that major pop. I work on a lot of professional women, who want to look good but aren’t overly fussy with their hair, so it has to be easy to maintain.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by having time to spend with my family. I’m not chasing money; I’m chasing the idea that I can create a life where I have flexibility to actually be out there living life and making memories with those I love.
