Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Woodworth.
Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a bookkeeping and accounting professional. I also relieve QuickBooks stress. Believe it or not, I’m one of the few that has a profession that matches my degree! It’s not exactly a profession that a 5 years old would proclaim they want, so I was definitely guided here. I attended a university that included satellite campuses on a military base. (My husband/high school sweetheart served in the NAVY) I had five choices to pick from for a degree program, so I went with the first on the list….accounting. It turned out to be the best decision ever, because I find it very therapeutic to organize! I LOVE organizing data. Also, it’s allowed me to be present in my children’s lives and husband’s life.
After my degree, I got my feet wet by doing accounting for a newspaper, a magazine, the world’s largest real estate company and a mortgage company. My first baby came along when I was working for the mortgage company. I had a terrible experience with her daycare and vowed I’d never put her in childcare again. It was my very first boss and long-time role model, Sondra Welsh that encouraged me to go out on my own and offered to be my first client. I have her to thank for a lifetime of happiness and she’s still my client! I moved forward and started my own company and chased my dream to be an entrepreneur and stay-at-home mom. I wanted to be both, so I strategically did both. Why not dream big?!? It’s hard work, but worth it! It’s still going well seven and a half years later and I’ve added another kid and oodles of new clients!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I started my company when my 1st kiddo was five months old. I’m sure my road would have been much smoother if I didn’t throw in the added dream of being a stay-at-home mom. Being involved in my kid’s lives and my husband’s life is so important to me. I’ve never had time to focus on struggles…I had work to do! During my allotted time of the day, with joy, I just take great care of my clients and focused on what I need to do to grow. My days are very calculated. I am a morning person and enjoy getting up at 4 AM. Luckily, my kids are sleepers and my best work is in the morning. Once my kids get up, I change gears and focus on adventures and exploring the world around us. Naptime was always a blessing and a great time to circle back around to my clients. My schedule has fluctuated over the years and finding a balance has been a struggle. But, with some practice, I’ve always got over those hurdles. Time management is key and waking up early makes me feel empowered. My planner is my best tool.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is LW Professional Solutions LLC. I relieve bookkeeping stress. I can fix what a client screwed up on their own, I train clients how to use QuickBooks, I offer full-service business and personal bookkeeping and can assist with budgeting and reporting. I do not do taxes or perform payroll, but I work great and communicate well with a client’s CPA and payroll company. I mentioned that I LOVE to organize, so I’m always eager to organize a client’s bookkeeping mess.
I’m primarily known for working virtually (you don’t want me to contact you by phone at 4 AM!) and I love being paperless. I am not stuck in my own ways, so I constantly find ways to work best with each client to keep them organized. After seven and a half years, I’ve learned everyone operates differently. If you can find their groove, they will be happy to work with you. What sets me apart from others is that I am not opposed to taking on small jobs. I only charge hourly purely to support small business owners with keeping their expenses down. If I only work for one hour, I only bill for one hour. I know a lot of start ups need a champion in their corner instead of a large expense.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Once both my kids are in elementary school, I plan to stop turning down referrals! Ha! In this chapter of my life, I have a very specific kind of new client that I can take on right now. I would like to help more clients down the road to keep track of their income and expenses regularly and train more business owners on how to use QuickBooks. No big changes in the near future for me. I’m completely happy with my healthy, work-life balance. Even if it limits my income potential.
