Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby and Regan Foster.
Libby and Regan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We bought the inn in November 2017 after spending the summer touring the space and dreaming of it’s potential. We both love Golden and Regan has an interest in real estate, so when this gem popped up on the market, we knew it was special.
We spent the first few months of ownership doing a full renovation, which wasn’t new for us, BUT our hope was to honor the Victorian roots of the house and that WAS new!! We did a lot of research about that era and what spaces would have looked like back then. It was super fun and totally out of our normal design aesthetic.
We rebranded the inn from a traditional style Bed and Breakfast into a Boutique Hotel. We’ve come a long way since we re-opened in February of 2018, we’ve learned a lot of lessons (some the hard way). But, we love this space, our employees and our guests!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Do small, family-owned businesses and renovations ever see smooth roads??!!
There are always bumps in the reno road. Things ALWAYS cost more than you think and take longer than you think. Even though we knew those things going in, it was still shocking!
Once we re-opened we had some repeat guests that weren’t happy with our changes. That can feel hard and can easily make you question if you’re on the right path. The key is to be confident in your hopes for a business. We remained true to our vision and that has served us. Those unhappy guests found other places that suited their needs better and we’ve found loyal guests that would have never found themselves in a Bed and Breakfast. The thing is, there’s room for all of us – people want tradition and people want innovation.
I think one of the biggest challenges to small businesses is staffing. We’ve been lucky to find a great staff, but that hasn’t come without some bumps too.
The Dove Inn – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Golden. We offer guests an accessible, luxurious stay with local and modern amenities. We have a behind the scenes approach to hospitality, meaning that we don’t check you in or out – we don’t hover – we let you vacation the way you want to vacation.
We send codes via text and email on the day of check-in. Those codes get you in the building and into your room. People love that they don’t need to worry about a key and that they really can come and go as they please. We do offer a light, self serve breakfast for our guests with delicious Cafe 13 pastries and other local items.
We have GREAT amenities. Our sheets are the best, we have local food items and kombucha and cold brew coffee on tap!! Our bath and body products are local and smell unique and so yummy!! We have a beautiful front yard that can accommodate 20+ people to lounge and chat and drink wine! We also host events like rehearsal dinners and cocktail hours and business gets to together!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Ooh! Success is so much in the eye of the beholder, that I hesitate to even answer this. In my business, success is firstly thriving employees. If I can invest in who my employees are individually and if I can see them confident in their roles as staff members and as human beings, then I’m good.
It’s also happy guests. Obviously, our guests are our markers for how we’re doing as a company. If they’re happy then we must be doing something right. In my family, success is raising my daughter to be kind, mindful and confident.
