Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Glazebrook.
Lori, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been a spiritual person, I believe in miracles and looking at the bright side of things AND I am fascinated with what we keep hidden away in the shadows, the ways in which we allow our experiences to determine who we are and how we react to life, our guilt, our shame, our fear, and our gifts. Life hasn’t been easy for me, but it really has been beyond beautiful. My “story” includes many books, some infinitely happy and others absolutely heartbreaking. I am a survivor of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. I’ve been married three times and divorced twice, I’ve raised three children on my own while putting myself through school, I taught five-year-olds in kindergarten and physical geography to undergrads, I became a yoga teacher, I managed and ran two yoga studios and a retreat center, I’ve helped to build an ashram and I have co-created intentional community, I’ve had debilitating nerve damage and lived with chronic pain. I have been absolutely broke and absolutely abundant. I have been alone and I have been surrounded by soul family. I have been broken down and I have been exalted. Life has handed a lot to me and what I’ve found is I never have to be a victim of my circumstances, my experiences teach me but they do not define me and that life holds an infinite amount of potential. We are here to be both spiritual AND human. There is no destination, no “peak pose” or finish line; our journey is our life. There will be struggles, there will be devastation and deep, heart hollowing grief AND there will be triumphs, joy, and ecstasy too. Our happiness doesn’t depend upon what we have or what we accomplish, our happiness depends upon our ability to be able to go with the flow that is life.
We have so much more power than we realize and it is important to me that others understand how much power they individually have too. When I decided to leave the education world and enter the yoga world full time, I coined my “brand” of yoga “feel.focus.flow.” because with those three components life becomes navigable and all three are integral for our wholeness. We must FEEL our emotions and the sensations present in our bodies, we must FOCUS our awareness on our intention so we may surrender into the FLOW that is life and allow ourselves to respond accordingly. I have learned a lot through my experiences and feel.focus.flow. is the practice that has come through me. I’m choosing to share it because I feel a need to share with others the ways in which my practice has enhanced my life, how it helps me be with my pain and my wounding and how it helps to integrate my divinity with my humanity.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth; it’s been life! A lot of decisions I have had to make have been ones that my friends and family sometimes didn’t understand. I’ve had to learn how to accept that my inner wisdom knows what’s best and that others’ concerns are for them and not me. I’ve had to feel fear and do it anyway when it comes to speaking up and saying what I see and I’ve had to take risks as I continue to step curiously into the unknown to see what is asking to be created there.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift where many are being called to listen to their inner wisdom as they navigate the curriculum that life gives them.
feel.focus.flow.™ is an approach to yoga that puts the role of the teacher/guru into the hands of the person practicing. This approach includes tantric and Vedantic philosophy, breath work, meditation, and movement. The feel.focus.flow. movement practice is accessible to anyone with an open mind; it can be done lying down, standing up, sitting still or moving around. 🙂 It’s true… in live classes, no one is doing the same thing; some people may be lying in a restorative pose while another is moving through a traditional flow. Someone else may be sitting in meditation while another looks like they are dancing and stomping around a bonfire. In feel.focus.flow., the only person determining the way in which you move and express is you. It’s my favorite part about leading this practice; it gives you permission to express who you are in an authentic way while cultivating the skills of nervous system regulation and emotional intimacy. The more you practice, the easier it is to be in the flow of life. This is a practice that naturally begins to bleed into other aspects of your life.
feel.focus.flow. teaches you to take your practice off of the cushion or mat and into the world. You don’t need to carve out more hours in your day you just need to bring more presence and awareness to the hours you do have. feel.focus.flow. gives you the tools necessary to navigate and be with all that life hands to you with acceptance, grace, and ease.
I lead live in-person workshops, teacher training and offer one on one intuitive astrology readings that look specifically at what your soul’s journey is in this lifetime. I also have an online studio where I offer a monthly subscription to feel.focus.flow.community, which includes all the tools you need to find more flow in your life: weekly live stream practices, online recordings, and meditations.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I have been watching the worlds of psychology, trauma treatment and yoga beginning to merge for the last several years and I am excited to see where this is all going. There is a need for people to learn how to expand and regulate their nervous systems as well as build intimacy with their emotions and the emotions of others. As we move towards integration as a society and we are seeing how the mind, emotions, and body are all intertwined somatic practices are going to become much more mainstream. As we learn more about our ability to create new neural pathways and improve the mind-body connection, we will see even more modalities that include ways to integrate our experiences more wholly.
