Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lawrence.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Guitarist and Vocalist based out of Denver and specialize in Vintage gypsy jazz, blues, and original music. I helped form a ‘Hot-Club’ Style or Gypsy-Jazz band called LAPOMPE in 2013 and since then we have gone on to be nominated for best jazz band on the front range by multiple publications as well as win the Producers choice award for the Westword Music Showcase. Our music has been featured on KUVO, Colorado’s premiere jazz station and we have been honored to perform at some the best events in Colorado including City Park Jazz, Jazz Five Points, Westword Music Showcase, Swallow Hill Music and many more. Our Debut all-original album ‘Passages’ is coming out June 5th.
A few years back I joined forces with Kenny Nelson of ‘Swingin’ Denver and Andy Hannum, the other guitarist in LAPOMPE to form the Speakeasy Soiree LLC. We are an entertainment company that primarily focuses on our flagship event “The Speakeasy Soiree”. We just completed our 4th year and sold-out 500 tickets at “The Hangar at Stanley” in Aurora. This event is a vintage-inspired celebration with Swing dancing, Aerial performances, Live music by LAPOMPE, food trucks and vintage vendors!
Since the formation of LAPOMPE, I also started another project called the ‘Royal Street Ramblers’. Formed with Gary Sloan, this band features a more New Orleans sound with drums, horns, and electric guitar. It lets me lean into my blues roots. In our first year, we got invited to play the Five Points Jazz Festival and have been making in-roads into the flourishing Denver music scene.
I also have a Solo project featuring my original compositions with a recurring 1st and 3rd performance at Burns Family Artisan Ales. This project is special because nothing is off limits. I play the widest variety of genres and lean into all sort of fun covers and originals. I recorded a singer-songwriter all-original album that I will be debuting this fall.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it has been relatively smooth. Every business venture is challenging, specifically one that is as personal as music. It’s hard to be vulnerable with your art and at the same time try to monetize it. For the most part, the music scene has been very collaborative and supportive. I have been extremely fortunate to have such talented, hard-working, and smart collection of bandmates. Without Andy Hannum, Erik Fellenstein, and Kevin Laxar all working together LAPOMPE would not be nearly as successful as we are. Each person brings unique skills to the table, on top excellent musicianship, and it has helped us to grow the band into a reliable project that helps us to pay (some of) the bills.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about LPJ Entertainment – what should we know?
As a business ‘LPJ Entertainment” is the parent company to LAPOMPE, Royal Street Ramblers, and all the projects that I book. We specialize in vintage entertainment and are known for our promptness and professionalism. We are extremely music focused and always deliver authentic performances that connect with the audience. We have booked for Large Corporate events, Weddings, Music festivals, retirement parties, and everything in between. Our prices are affordable and by working with a variety of bands and musicians, we are able to deliver a wide range of music that fits more events.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty and open communication are the most important features of success. Being transparent with the services that you are able to provide is paramount. It’s also extremely important in the digital age to be prompt with your response time. In the music business, it’s also very important to dress sharp and be very punctual.
